Hi,

I'm willing to gie a try at Knoppix, but i'd like to know a few things first.
I've already read quite a few things about it, but i still have some doubts.
Here they are:

1. I know it is possible to create new users with their homes in a USB stick.
But what about their passwords ? They're supposed to bem in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow
Does things like ssh create ~/.ssh files in the stick ?

2. Is it possible to transfer the whole /etc to the stick and use this /etc by default ? I need to change quite a few /etc files mainly because of my adsl connection and there is also the issue of the users' passwords and etc...

3. Is it possible in a laptop to switch the Knoppix disc with, let's say, a audio CD and hear it ?

4. Is it possible with Knoppix to view "comercial/encrypted" DVDs ? If yes, how ?

Thank you in advance.

Warm regards,
Mário Gamito

1. Passwords MUST remain in /etc. Yes programs can make ~/.* files on the stick

2. Well, you certanly can transfer /etc to anyplace you want, but it has to be in the root directory in order for your system to work.

3. I could be wrong, but I would say no. The best thing do is rip all your cd's to mp3's and carry them on that handy usb stick you were talking about earlier(if you have enough space).

4. Haven't tried

Welcome Gamito,

KNOPPIX can do many things very well and
there are many ways to work with it.

1) I don't know how to put multiple users on
one USB stick. How about making several
partition on the stick if it is big? But if you
want security -- then seperate sticks are best.

2) A script can make it possible to help with
your adsl connection. You cannot move
the /etc if you are using the Live CD.

3) No. When knoppix is running it must
always have the disk. There are two solutions
1) Add a second CD CDRW or DVD
I use a USB second drive and it works well.
2) Use a KNOPPIX type install to run from
a hard dirve. (Of course there is also
a full hard drive install.)

4) Yes but legal restrictions may apply where you live. http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6596

I hope this gets you started. Read the DOCS and search on
this forum. Also there is help on IRC #knoppix

When you get you project going let others know in the
Idea and Customize posting.

Best Wishes,
