After having read other posts of trouble with ProSavage KM266
cards, I have tried several of the recommended fixes:

knoppix xmodule=savage
knoppix noapic xmodule=savage
knoppix failsafe

None of these work. The only message I can see is:

su(pam_unix)[447]: session opened for user knoppix by (uid=0)

I also tried xmodule=s3 and got:

Starting X11...
Retrying with server xfree86(vesa)
Retrying with server xfree86(fbdev)
error: No suitable X-server found for your card

Output from lspci looks like:

Any suggestions?

Hello, I've been considering a KM266-based mobo myself recently, but in the end I held back because it was unclear whether it worked under linux. Plus it seems to have been superceded by KM400 already, damnit. I *thought* the VIA/S3 driver had been merged into the core XFree86. But perhaps it is not part of 4.3 yet, so Knoppix does not have it - but I cannot say for sure. Anyway if you want to install to HD, the following links should help you:http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=296#ProSavageDDR
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html
http://www.linuxtested.com/results/infoway_ath_xp_am.html
Also, have you been trying "knoppix fb1024x768"?
Or possibly "knoppix xserver=XFree86 xmodule=fbdev fb1024x768"?

Well don't be too hasty. With XFree86 4.3.0 which comes standard with the
Slackware 9.0 distribution, the Savage driver works perfectly as does the
fbdev driver. It is just Knopix that I am having trouble with. I see from the
XFree86.0.log, that it is also 4.3.0 but a Debian version (Debian 4.3.0-0ds4)
which might be causing a problem with an old savage driver.

I should point out that I also run another dual booting computer with Win2K and
Slackware 9.0 with a Matrox video card onboard and Knoppix works just fine
there.

I haven't tried fbdev since it didn't seem to work before (see above). However,
it is always a fallback that seems to work with any system when a specific
driver will not work. I know it worked in Slackware 9.0 since I used it before
attempting to use the savage driver.

I'll try your suggestions.

Still no go! I'm at a loss now.

Still no go! I'm at a loss now.

With knoppix 3.2(.3) it worked with
