View Full Version : HD Install - No /dev 's that I had with Live CD

Ok, when I was using the Live CD...

Knoppix KNEW I had the following:
/dev/hdc1
/dev/hda1
/dev/cdrom0
/dev/cdrom1
/dev/sda1

Now it knows they are their - they show up in Info Center - I can see them, but they can't be used...

/dev/hda1 has been partitioned into /dev/hda1 for Linux, and /dev/hda5 has become the Linux Swap.

/dev/cdrom exists - but it points to my DVD and won't run anything if I put a CD or DVD in it.
My other CDROM is a CD-RW - it knows its a CD-RW, but refuses to allow me to get it as a device - nothing is auto-configuring like it did in the Live CD.

How do I get my devices back? I did the DVD apt-get, and the stuff got added, but nothing seems to tell the install that I have devices I can use?

Help? What can I do? I have a system with a CD-RW, a DVD, a SanDisk ImageMate II Flash, and second hard drive, and NOTHING is able to be found, used, mounted, viewed, etc...

Something is rotten in the state of Knoppix HD Install, and it ain't pretty,
Thanks in advance,
Cuddles

Can you post the output of dmesg | grep scsi, fdisk -l, ls -l /dev/cdrom and the contents of the file /etc/fstab?

Try this for the /etc/fstab make a backup before you change it by cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.original. You should always do this whenever you make a lot of changes to a file to have the original to reference or in the worst case senario copy back over the file you changed thus getting back to the original settings.

# /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
#
# filesystem mountpoint type options dump pass
/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/hda5 none swap sw 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy vfat defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022 0 0
/scd0 /dvd iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
/scd1 /cdrom iso9660 defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto 0 0
# partitions found by Knoppix
/dev/hdc1 /mnt/hdc1 vfat noauto,users,exec,umask=000,uid=knoppix,gid=knoppi x 0 0
#/dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 vfat noauto,users,exec,umask=000,uid=knoppix,gid=knoppi x 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 auto noauto,users,exec 0 0

The first thing you need to do is make a directory for the mount point for your dvd with mkdir /dvd and check to see where the /dev/dvd if it exists links to with ls -l /dev/dvd if it points to /dev/sr0 or /dev/scd0 then everything is ok if it does not then rm /dev/dvd to remove then ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/dvd to create the new link if it did not exist just make the link and then next you have to correct the link that is wrong for the cdrom/burner with rm /dev/cdrom to remove then ln -s /dev/scd1 /dev/cdrom to make the new link. You should also check to make sure that the /cdrom mount point exists but it should already be there if not make it. This should have everything working correctly although I am not sure about the SanDisk never used one of them.

The dmesg | grep scsi should not have done that it sould have produced output similar to this:

[10:24 PM Fri Dec 26: stephen @ ~]
>$ dmesg | grep scsi
Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=Linux ro root=301 hdc=ide-scsi apm=on
ide_setup: hdc=ide-scsi
ide-scsi is deprecated for cd burning! Use ide-cd and give dev=/dev/hdX as device

Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 5

You may have missed the "|" pipe character which on my keyboard is above the \ key. All steps except the dmesg would have to be done as root.

First of all, thank you Stephen for helping me out here.
Second, yes I did mess up the dmesg command, with the italic I thought it was a [slash] not a [pipe] - Do you still need that information? I can still provide it...

Now to the next step, did all that you said, I even did a restart - I come from a long line of Windows history - you reboot whenever you do anything. This is what I got...

Desktop:
Icon CD - CD-ROM (scd1) (not mounted)
Icon HD - Hard Disc (scd0) (not mounted)
all else looks perfect - the SanDisc is a Flash writer chip - never tried it in Knoppix, nor in HD Install - not important at this time.

Issues:
When a CD-Audio is in the DVD drive (I assume that is scd0) - I can't open, mount, or play using open with "XMMS"

When a CD-Audio is in the CD-ROM drive/CD-REWRITE (I assume that is scd1) - I can't open, mount, or play using open with "XMMS"

I did write down messages given with the scd1 device:
CD-Audio in scd1 ---
Mount = special device /scd1 does not exist
Open With XMMS = retrieving data from devices is not supported

Now here is a side note, when I ran with the Live CD, Knoppix, when I right clicked on these devices, KNEW that I could "Play CD Audio" or even "Play DVD / something else" - and even though the device was not mounted, I could select these, never had the DVD test, the Live CD was always loaded in the DVD device, but the CD-RW I could put an audio CD and use "Play Audio CD" on the right click, and it played, with XMMS by default.

Are we working to this conclusion? That was a slick setup, and I easily was able to navigate and work with the interface that way.

Again Stephen,
Thanks for the help,
Cuddles

Second, yes I did mess up the dmesg command, with the italic I thought it was a [slash] not a [pipe] - Do you still need that information? I can still provide it...

The information that I would have gotten from that command was in the entire dmesg that you posted so no I do not need it anymore and that is just about what I thought for the pipe.

Now to the next step, did all that you said, I even did a restart - I come from a long line of Windows history - you reboot whenever you do anything. This is what I got...

You should right click on the desktop and use the Create New -> CD/DVD-ROM Device and make two new shortcuts for the DVD drive use the /dev/scd0 in the device tab for it and call it DVD and for the burner use the /dev/scd1 then call it Burner this should not conflict with any other names on the desktop shortcuts and put a data cd in each drive and make sure that you can access by clicking on the icon for each drive. The icons that you have there now are most likely pointing to the wrong devices in the device tab for the shortcut. The HD icon should definitely not have the /dev/scd0 as the device that is your dvd drive it should be either /dev/hda1 or /dev/hdc1 for your HD's partitions that are in the system you may want to change or create new ones here as well then delete all the old icons once you confirm that everything works. note: with the data cd you put in you may have to right click on the icon for the drive and select unmount to be able to eject the disc after you access it in the drives.

Issues:
When a CD-Audio is in the DVD drive (I assume that is scd0) - I can't open, mount, or play using open with "XMMS"

I did write down messages given with the scd1 device:
CD-Audio in scd1 ---
Mount = special device /scd1 does not exist
Open With XMMS = retrieving data from devices is not supported

Try to play an audio cd in the cd/rw first using the Play Location from the menu and use /dev/cdrom and you should be able to play the cd next stop the cd from playing and go into the Options -> Preferences from the menu and under the Audio I/O plugins tab select the AudioCD Reader in the plugin box once highlighted then click on the Configure tab and in the CD Recorder Configuration window that pops up choose the Output tab and check the Read Digital CD Audio is selected and confim the selection by the OK button then in Preferences click apply and close the window with OK shutdown XMMS and restart and confirm that the digital play back works. Now that the digital play back is working try the /dev/dvd for the playback with the cd in that drive obviously.BTW now that I am thinking about it which device the dvd or cdrw has the cable attached to the sound card if it is the dvd then use the /dev/dvd for the first playing of the audio cd then onto the cdrw for the second playing after having the digital play back working.

Again Stephen,
Thanks for the help,
Cuddles

I never used that setup but I am about to put a hd in my machine that had knoppix on it to replace the hd that died so once I get that re-installed I will check how they have the links and icons setup when I get the knoppix back on it.

Stephen, I really appreciate the help in this...

And with that, don't get mad at me here, I am seriously dumb and a newb to all this, but, I neglected to realize that all the time I've been doing apt-get 's -=- not many, but a few -=- I have noticed the #### not upgraded line - I am now doing more than (estimated) 2 days worth of an apt-get upgrade -=- I hope all the word here hasn't been in vain [?]

Anyway, assuming that I haven't boggled the whole thing, here is what I did, am, and got as results...

apt-get upgrade -=- in background, with more than 6xx upgrades, and over 2 days to ETA.
created a DVD and Burner icons on desktop as per your instructions, device had a pull-down that had the /scd# in them, I tried them first, with below results, and then went back in and forced the /dev/scd# into the device - same results again as below.
moved the old icons for the scd0 and scd1 off to the side, so I know what to delete, when the time comes.

tried to click on the "burner" icon, with a DATA CD in the device, got the following:

Could not mount device
The reported error was:
mount: special device /scd1 does not exist

I did not try the DVD icon yet, assuming same results as above for the /scd1 device at this time.

Are we getting closer?
Thanks again,
Cuddles

OOPS, I forgot this, just after I clicked the submit button...

DVD has the audio cable running from device to sound card. Knoppix Live CD was interesting on this though - this is something Windows never did - I could put an audio cd in the CD-RW and STILL play the cd through the computer sound system, as well as using the DVD - In Windows, I could only play a audio CD in the DVD device and get audio through my computer - If I used the CD-RW in Windows to play an audio cd it would go through the motions of playing, but never come out of the computer in sound. I gotta hand it to Knoppix for that one, doing something Windows never did...

One final note: Considering I had to add another post here, I did put a DATA CD into the DVD device, and upon clicking the DVD icon on the desktop - came up with the exact same error message box, but with the DVD's device name instead.

You can stop the apt-get upgrade if you want with with CTRL+C and resume it later it will pick up at where it left off.

This does not look right the and I know why I have typos in the /etc/fstab that I have posted above and you used the /scd0 & 1 and they should have been /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1 you should edit the file and put the /dev in front of the lines, sorry about that I should have checked the post more carefully and to top it off I get it correct in the paragraph below it Doh!

Yes we are the shortcuts should work correctly with the corrected typos. Just seen the next post when I was previewing this It looks like knoppix is already using the digital output for the audio cd's so you should be able to access them with the play location /dev/dvd or /dev/cdrom in XMMS. The digial output uses the system bus (IDE cable) instead of the audio cable from the back of the device to play the sound that is why you could play it in knoppix and not in windows.

Better, much better...

1) icons when clicked now OPEN a konqueror window of the disks contents...

This is nice when I did both devices with a DATA CD. But...

2) Placed a CD Audio disk into the CD-RW first, didn't see you later post about doing the DVD first - setup XMMS as stated, exited, came back and asked again for the Window that asks for the PLAY FILE selection, canceled out of that window and went back into the PLAY LOCATION - set it back to /dev/cdrom - played fine, exited.

Went to the DVD device, placed a AUDIO CD in the DVD device, right clicked the DVD icon, and selected open with... selected XMMS - XMMS opened again with the PLAY FILE location window, closed it, selected the PLAY LOCATION - set it, went to configs changed them, they were already set as stated. Played CD through DVD on XMMS - closed down XMMS. ReRightClicked on DVD - had to select open with again - XMMS - XMMS yet again brought up the PLAY FILE location window - can I get this thing to automatically use the play location of the device I OPEN IT WITH ? This is becoming a pain in the rumpus.

One good thing - "Burner" and "DVD" are at least working - haven't tryed the DVD with an actual DVD in it yet - assume I need to use XINE for that? Any other special stuff?

Finishing up (wish list):
1) DVD and BURNER icons to have the selection of Play CD or Play DVD options, or at least have a right click option that "pushes" the device I am using into the program I am running for the device - i.e. DVD pushes the /dev/dvd into XINE - CD AUDIO pushes the [device] into XMMS.
2) Test and ensure the DVD device can play an actual DVD as well as the CD AUDIO issue above.

If anything, its a pain, but YOU GOT ME WORKING ! ! ! ! !
I am extremely greatful to have you gotten me this far :D Thanks

Just as a test, and possible completion of the DVD playing a DVD test, #2 in my WISH LIST...

Placed a DVD in the DVD device, fired up XINE, clicked the DVD Navigator, and WHAMMO - it reallized it was "THE MATRIX RELOADED" - YES !

Hit Play, and the playback is choppy -=- I think I need to set dma on this - right??????

I saw the command many times in a lot of these newsgroup posts, something -1 [thats a ONE - right?]

most of the posts showed using hda1 or something, would I replace that with /dev/dvd or do I use the "original" device, /dev/scd# ????

Hi Cuddles
If you refer to the second last paragraph of my last post in the "playing a dvd is choppy" topic, I think it is saying you should enable dma on hdb, that being the physical "SONY DVD-ROM DDU1611, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive" on your system.

It already looks like the dma is set unless it got turned off by the scsi but on my machine it is turned on with the scsi emulation working for my burner it does not seem to want to test the speed though. From your dmesg above:

ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA

From my machine:

HappyTux:/home/stephen# hdparm -i /dev/hdc

/dev/hdc:

You have to use the /dev/hdb which is what your drive looks like to the hdparm command to check the settings it supports with the -i option to see what it is actually set too you use the no option example in my post above the -Tt options test the speed of the drive for a large and small file size transfer. To turn on the settings for dma (I am not sure this will work never done it on a cdrom before) you would use hdparm -d1 /dev/hdb this would work as well for your HD's if it is not turned on on them as will the rest of the command options. You have to be root to use all these commands.

I will check the setup in knoppix when I get the hd I just took out of my main machine to put the new one into it, then I have to install in the spare machine with the dead hd and install knoppix on it so that may be tommorow before I get that done.

Sorry THO - I didn't mean to be missunderstood - I was just questioning. I really didn't even understand the whole "dump" I even placed in this thread, until you said it was being reported in it. Looked through the whole pile, and realized that your right, and it was hdb - I don't have a clue on this whole thing. I've got more than 3 gig on this drive, all being Knoppix/Debian, and I don't have a clue what, or how, it works.... [does this sound like a true blue noob to anyone? I admit it though.]

Thanks TearingHairOut, you have been more than helpful, maybe even so far as being that knight in shinning armor :D

Thanks Stephen, you too have been enormously helpful, I've got a CD and DVD working, far more than I had before. BTW: Can I delete those "defective" icons that were pointing to the scd# devices, the ones labeled CD-ROM (scd0/1) now? I have the other Burner and DVD ones still.

I hope I don't have this much trouble with the new system, but if I do, I know that this newgroup will be here, and with a lot of Guru (even if you both say you are noob's, doesn't matter) people like yourselves to help out.

Thanks for everything,
Eternally thankful,
Cuddles

Yes you may as well delete the old icons the new ones you made are working fine so there is no need for the others now.
