How about a version of Knoppix for GPS users.
It could use some software like GPSdrive
( http://www.gpsdrive.cc/index.shtml )
There can be versions with maps for different regions of the country.
Download your region iso, pop it in your laptop with gps plugged in, and track your movement in real time.
And for Ham users that use APRS, you can include xastir
