Switching VGA modes and picking /dev/tty to display

I have two actions that I want to control from an application (script) that are normally keyboard operations.

1) sense/select/modify /dev/tty character resolutions after boot (132x30, 80x50). Mode numbers?
2) command which /dev/ttyN is being displayed on the monitor. Equivelant to (Ctl-Alt-F2) from the keyboard

What application or methods accomplich each of these?
