New-bee Linux desktop question (KDE / Gnome).

I am just now getting into the Gnome vs KDE thing.

[Question]
Aside from KDE can someone explain to me the difference between the Gnome Desktop and the Ximian desktop ?
I now they are related, but if they are the same thing then why do they have different names ?)
