I have Knoppix 3.3 installed to my hd. It came with k3b but when I ran it, I would get an error box telling me to use k3bSetup to fix an issue about cdrecord (?). k3bSetup was not installed by Knoppix.

Using apt-get, I couldn't find k3b setup so I removed k3b intending to reinstall it using apt-get. I figured k3bsetup might just come along with it.

This is what I get now:

===============
root@full:/home/ken# apt-get install k3b

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
k3b: Depends: libasound2 (> 0.9.8) but 0.9.3-2 is to be installed
E: Broken packages
root@full:/home/ken#
=================

Is there a way around this that won't break something else??

Thanks for any help.

it is time you do some reading up on apt. I had the same problem with k3b when installing through debian packages, and when i tried to run the program again, it wouldnt work. Readup on how to "fix broken packages" in apt. this will solve your problem. The reason there is a problem to begin with is that the debian package of k3b requires more than onefile, it needs several... unlike compiling k3b yourself. so get your dependencies straightenned out, and then then fix brken packages. type "man apt-get" or "apt-get help" no quotes, in a command prompt to get more info about the apt-get system.

Well, thanks for that but the bad news is that I have thoroughly and repeatedly read the Apt HowTo and I have taken the steps it recommends.

I have also reread the man pages, interesting and informative but they don't get me past this problem.

. . . . still stuck without k3b.

You would now have K3b at the latest version. You should also install the recommended vcdimager package as well and sometimes it nice to have some of the suggested ones too.
