For some reason, every time I do the hdd install of knoppix (debian), I get a "missing operating system" message. I've cleared the mbr and reinstalled a few times, with no results.

Windows 2000 boots fine, however, and I'm wondering how I can either put lilo/grub over the windows 2000 bootloader (installing it in windows, since I cannot get into linux without the boot CD), or use the windows 2000 bootloader to get into knoppix.

Thanks!

The error message you're seeing might be caused by the partition to which you install not being marked as active. Otherwise, using the NT boot loader is certainly doable and well documented (http://www.google.com/search?q=nt+linux+boot+loader). In short, with lilo: install to the root fs instead of mbr, then copy the lilo boot sector to your NT startup partition, add an entry for it in boot.ini, and you're all set.
