It may be a problem with the video driver. Did you try specifying xmodule=vesa as a cheat code? If you know what video card the laptop has, you could try the correct module, like xmodule=ati, etc.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 with ATI rage mobility M4. During bootup, X server fails to start and Knoppix automatically falls back to the vesa driver and that works. Good luck.

hey i dunno if this'll help but i heard you can fix it by changing the video buffer (default 1mB) in bios to 8mb. dunno if it works though.

reply if it is successful.

probably wont work as you wont have access to those kinds of settings in notebook bios.

You did not mention you tried the most prominent fix:
Start with knoppix vsync=60
It works on my Toshiba Satellite.

I have knoppix running on my Dell Inspiron 8500 I had the same problem initially but if you type the cheatcode:

knoppix fb1600x1200 screen=1600x1200

at the boot prompt it will fix it. Just replace the 1600x1200 part with what ever your laptops native resolution is. Works for me. Hope that helps.

same here. Nothing works.

I've had the stupid 2inch black border around my knoppix for ages. <grumble> I've searched sooo many forums, discussions and faqs but still havn't found a solution yet. <sigh>

i've got an 3800, can't remember if i got this black border with knoppix, but i did get it with windows. i had to hit the function key then F7(or it might be F8, says font in purple letters on it) and that fixed it, worth a try!

I had the same black border problem with Knoppix before too and I was also going to suggest the Fn+F7 (or F8 - I don't remember right now) key combination. You may need to repeat that combination 2 or 3 times before it works though, but I never figured out why.

FN (function key) at the bottom left hand side of the keyboard

yeah the Fn+F8 activates the CRT/LCD function. But it didn't work on my Dell Inspiron 1100. Just stuffed up my screen even more coz my menu bar at the bottom disappeared and a fuzzy inaccessable bar appeared up the top. but the black border's still there. I tried pressing Fn+F8 for like 5 times but still the same result.

thx for trying anewayz.

The solution must be the screen cheat code, as mentioned before. If I use anything but 'knoppix screen=1600x1200' when booting i get the black bars around the edge of the screen. 1600x1200 is my native screen resolution. Figure out your screens native resolution and try again. Remember to type "knoppix" before the cheat code.

Same thing with my Toshiba Sattelite but it works after harddriveinstall and then afterwards changing resolution to 1024 @ 60Hz from withing Control Center. 3.2 Worked like a sharm though.

I've got the same problem you guys have been discussing here on my Inspiron 1100 laptop. I think I've tried all available bootcodes but none of them helps. Anyone come up with a sollution yet?

i have just installed knoppix to my AOPEN 1545 laptop..

at first when i changed my reso to 1024x768 i too got that iritating black border...

than i reinstalled knoppix(from the livecd) but i used fb1024x768..

than when boot into my hard disk installed knoppix the reso is 1024x768 and no more black border....

but in the control centre it still wrote 800x600..

Well, I think I've tried all combinations of bootcodes but none helps. I am unable to install Knoppix to the HD on this laptop, so I need it to work when running from CD.

I says the videomemory is at only 1mb in the BIOS (And you cannot change this). Perhaps the XFree drivers are unable to allocate more memory for the graphics? The Windows drivers seems to be allocating memory automatically depending on how much you need, resolution you're running in etc.
