how do i install knoppix from the cd to a NTFS harddrive?

You don't. Linux doesn't run on NTFS (thank god). You'll need to shrink your partition and make room for Linux. Fortunately Knoppix has just the tool for this- qtparted.

Use partition magic or qtparted to resize the NTFS partition and create a few GB of blank space on the Hard drive. It's a good idea to defragment from windows first.
After that's done, boot into knoppix and run one of the installer scripts and follow a guide. You'll be prmpted to make a linux partition or two for it and set some options, then all the files will copy over.

The command to run qtparted is, from a terminal: sudo qtparted
