View Full Version : k3b ripping to ogg vorbis

I've recently done a knoppix HD install and want to rip my CD collection to Ogg Vorbis. Everything works well in k3b (burning , CDDB) but I can only rip to WAV format. My system does have oggenc installed.

I would like to rip directly to vorbis without ripping to WAV and then encoding because k3b looks like it would make the process very eay and hands off. I would also like to use k3b rather than installing other software.

So can anyone tell me what I need to do or install to setup ripping to other formats?

I've never liked K3b for ripping. Why not do an

apt-get install kdemultimedia-kio-plugins

once it's done, pop a CD in, don't mount it, hit the home icon and you'll see Audio CD browser in the LH pane. Hook up to the internet so CDDB can work and drag the oggs to a folder of your choice (or use the "copy here" dialogue).

Hmmm, I tried doing this but apt-get gave me an error saying that I have unmet dependencies, kdelibs and libqc3c102-mt. Both are listed as up to date.

Right now if I try to browse the audio CD in the left pane it pops up an error saying

Error
protocol not supported
audiocd

The message from apt-get seemed to imply that the dependency isue mght be a bug in the package due to my only trying to install one thing. Is there some workaround for this, and if so how do I find the package maintainer to write a bug report?

Looks a bit odd to me. Try running

apt-get update

first and then giving it another go.

Error
protocol not supported
audiocd

is caused because you don't have the kdemultimedia-kio-plugins

No go after apt-get update. I don't know if it will help, but my /etc/apt/sources.list file contents are posted at the bottom of this message. A few of the sources seem to be out of date (the XFree and Mozilla), but other than that apt-get has seemed to work fine for me.

Also, in case it helps I did just successfully use oggenc to create an OGG from a WAV, so my system can do that much.

Any other info I can provide just let me know (forgot to mention earlier, installed from Knoppix 3.3 downloaded just a few weeks ago).

You don't until you confirm a bug you are using testing/unstable and things are expected to be uninstallable from time to time. BTW you are not supposed to be able to browse an audio cd there is no file system on it. First thing you should try to do is get k3b up to the current release with apt-get -s install -t unstable kb3 libk3bcore2 libk3bproject1 libk3btools1 libk3bplugin1 remove the -s to actually install if the output looks good. Then check and see if the problem persists I never use k3b to rip I always use the package grip which does a nice job you may want to check this out if for nothing other than comfirming that a problem exists with k3b.

I know that there's no file system on an audio CD, I was refering to the Audio CD browser built into Konqueror, mentioned in an above post.

Thanks for mentioning grip, it looks like it may do what I want.

Also, anyone used tkcOggRipper? I've looked up a few different packages for doing ripping and this looked like it might be nice. In the meantime I'll give grip a try.

Stranger and stranger. Now, I do use the Audio CD Browser. On many distros it's actually built in. On Knoppix it's not because the protocol is missing (I guess to save a bit of space -- also, it's not a lot of use on a CD based system!).

But on 3.3 all I did was to apt-get install kdemultimedia-kio-plugins

and it works. (Whether or not it's "really" an Audio CD Browser is a bit academic -- that's what the K folk call it. I guess it's really a pseudo browser as the "filesystem" is really created on the fly.)

I've known dpkg get confused at times when it wants a dependency and doesn't realise that it already has it installed. I'd be inclined to try removing kdelibs and libqc3c102-mt and trying again. But it worked for me without a hitch.

BTW, you sources.list looks fine.

Well I just installed and tested grip, and it worked perfectly so no more need to worry about k3b. I originally thought it would make a good ripper because of how nice its burning interface, but no matter, grip does everything I wanted.

Thanks to fingers99 and Stephen for helping me get this sorted out.
