Does unstable mean that it is more likely to crash? I would like to update but would like to know if this updated version is as good as the one I have know which is the 3.3 2003 version. Thanks.

I think there is a bug in this version. When installed to HD, it seems that it tries to load modules for the 2.4.20 kernel, and it fails.

Then TV card doesn't work, you can't access ext3 partiones, etc...

Hi,

I have problem with this version 3.3. My graphic card chipset is SiS (SiS 630). Knoppix 3.3 from 2003.11.19 and 3.2, 3.1 worked very correctly. After installation on hdd, by trying "startx" I have communicates:

sisfb: Fatal error: Unable to reserve frame buffer memory
/lib/modules/2.4.24-xfs/kernel/drivers/video/sis/sisfb.o: init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.24-xfs/kernel/drivers/video/sis/sisfb.o insmod sis failed

Command "dmesg |grep error shows:

usbdevfs: remount parameter error
sisfb: Fatal error: Unable to reserve frame buffer memory
sisfb: Fatal error: Unable to reserve frame buffer memory

What can I do ??

Regards. Larry

I have the same problem on a Clevo 2200S with graphic card chipset SIS630 and only with this last Knoppix 3.3 version.

I just ordered a CD from CheapBytes. BTW, I'm now "dual booted" Knoppix (installed to a hard drive partition) and Gentoo. Gentoo has KDE 3.2 working. They're catching up with Debian rapidly in terms of packaging, although their "Live CD" isn't (as of 1.4) compressed, so they don't have 2 GB of software on it.

Better use a newer KNOPPIX (new version 2004-02-16 with bug fixes) as it addresses issues with hard disk installations:

I also have a laptop with Sis630 graphics chipset, it used to work no problem with knoppix, up to 3.3. since later version of 3.3 I get a blank screen if it starts xfree86. after looking at the current boot sequence and the previous boot sequence, it seems it used to detect my 630 graphics card and use the vesa server, now it detects my 630 and tries to use the sis server, which doesnt seem to work on this sis630. so I tried typing knoppix xmodule=vesa at the boot prompt and low and behold all works again. anyone got any ideas why the sis server gives a blank screen on a sis630 chipset? I dont care that much now I've solved it, I may lose some hardware acceleration, but at least I can boot to kde again using knoppix 3.4 10-05-2004
