Here's a torrent for Knoppix 3.4:

I added your torrent to my azureus, and it is seeding the same file with your tracker, too. It seems like two perfect rips :)

The problem with the original client and my post seems to be the multiple trackers in the file. I made a new .torrent for those with non-Azureus Clients, and since the files are identically, you may use both trackers for faster and redundant downloading.

New .torrent (http://www.torrentz.com/torrents/view_3402)

Whoooow. Downloading it with wireless LAN in just 30 minutes.

What I did:
* make the hard disk writeable
* open konsole
* cd to the hard disk where the iso should be saved
* download Knoppix34-ct.iso.torrent from link above there
* btdownloadcurses Knoppix34-ct.iso.torrent

I downloaded the iso and ran it in VMWare, here are the things I have noticed so far.

1. Yes, kliki works just fine.

2. /boot shows both a 2.4.23-xfs and a 2.6.1 kernel present, on my system it booted to the 2.4-23-xfs, not sure how to force a 2.6.1 boot.

3. Under Games, almost all KDE games are gone, there are several Gnome games present, so

4. Boot with desktop=gnome and the Gnome 2.4 desktop runs. So it looks like a lot of things have been trimmed to get gnome back on the CD.

Now if I could just boot to 2.6.1....

Now if I could just boot to 2.6.1....

That should be easy:

knoppix26

But at least on my system, PCMCIA does not work in 2.6.1...

Again, many thanks to all the people who are uploading this with bittorrent. Befor everyone downloads this, please remind yourself that this is a special release for c't and it has a different collection of software than regular Knoppix. Due to the inclusion of Gnome, a _lot_ of apps had to be stipped out, TeX/LyX for example. KK announced that there will be a new version of 3.3 also soon.

So here is the package list of 3.4 c't edition:
edit - list only went up to P and seemed to get cut off and break the layout, maybe post a link to a .txt list of packages. -eadz

probono,

Do you think you got it all? :p

As for the nVidia nForce2 LAN driver issues in Knoppix, I just used Arkaine's Overclockix version with the drivers. Klaus left them out on purpose and so rendered Live CD Knoppix all but useless for me.

Now that I have a Shuttle SB75G2 XPC SFF Intel Canterwood box, I'm hoping that the new 3.4 Knoppix won't have this issue.

Grrr, mine's not booting at all. Re-downloading from the second torrent link...

This may be different from the mainstream knoppix releases, but it can give remastering maestros a headstart on 3.4-based custom CD's.

FYI, I was able to boot with the default( knoppix24 ) kernel but the v2.6 kernel( knoppix26 ) would not boot and looked like it was "sticking" on my CDROM. I've got a SCSI cdrom with two IDE disks( one on HPT366 ). Maybe the AIC7xxx.o driver isn't ready/loading but the last line was saying that it was looking at /dev/hde for the CDROM and that was wrong.

It did seem like KDE was a bit quicker when I ran the 2.4.x-xfs kernel.

They both loaded for me...but you can't use insmod with the 2.6 kernel...I was prepared to try installing module-init-tools with a hd-install, but you can't install it either...the installer is missing a file called knx-templates.0.39.tgz. But it's still cool to try out the new kernel and all. :D

FYI- you can download and extract the knx-templates to your ramdisk, then cd to the dir, and ./knoppix-installer.

I'm remastering this thing right now. :)

I noticed that as well if you have a net connections setup then you need to:

wget http://debian.tu-bs.de/knoppix/installer/knx-templates-0.39.tgz
cp /usr/sbin/knoppix-installer .
sudo ./knoppix-installer

At first I could not figure out how you get it to boot 2.6 from a HD install though I just kept getting a kernel panic no init found no matter what init= I passed so I had to boot with the CD and edit lilo to show a prompt to boot the old kernel. Then I changed to the /boot directory and ran mkinitrd -o linux-2.6.1.gz to make a new initrd then changed the initrd= line in the /etc/lilo.conf to initrd=/boot/linux-2.6.1.gz and ran /sbin/lilo -v to write lilo and rebooted and Voila! kernel 2.6 on a HD install.

Edit: And I had to add:

## Needed for kernel 2.6
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

To the /etc/fstab as well to get the /sys mount needed for kernel 2.6 the directory /sys already existed so I did no have to create it.

The torrent from http://debian.christian-leber.de/Knoppix34-ct.iso.torrent didnt work for me, wasnt able to boot.
However Im writing this from a good cd that I bought with the ct magazine this morning. First impressions; ps/2-mouse doesnt seem to work (both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, tried mouseconfig), screen refresh rate was autodetected as 75hz instead of 85hz (had that kind of problem with one of the earlier 3.3-releases too) but other that these minor annoyances it is a pleasure to use! Now with the 2.6 kernel kde feels snappier and knoppix seems to boot faster as well. That "live-installer" thingie is working quite well, installed nvidia drivers and pingus (that lemmings-clone) but tuxkart didnt install correctly.
All in all, Knoppix 3.4 looks very promising!

P.S.: All grammatical mistakes in this post are due to a bug;-) Seriously, the character thats supposed to go between the n and the t in for example didnt does not work for some odd reason..

Wonderfull, Downloaded the CT version, boot into kernel 2.6...

My network card doesn't work,
It worked with Knoppix 3.3
damn...

So I guess my dream of getting 2.6 kernel with kde 3.2 is lost for now.

*edit*

odd... the card works in 2.4

but this code doesn't work

cp /usr/sbin/knoppix-installer .

Says I'm missing an argument for cp

I got it all installed just fine...and using Stephen's directions got it to boot under 2.6. I still can't install my netcard module...but it's a really old one, so maybe it just won't work. I ran modinfo and it says that it's a 2.4.23 module, even though i put linuxver=2.6.1 when i compiled it. I assume it's just too old of a driver...unfortunately i'm stuck with it for now though.

SUPER !!!!!!
I can finally write in NTFS !!!!!!!!
Now the users can really use the cd in dual boot.
What I will do nevertheless is adding an icon on the root of the cd,in order to mount the ntfs disk in READ/WRITE (that means adding the XP files to the cd).
Thanks klaus and all the other contributors ....... :D :D :D :D

Hi, bittorrent worked wonders for me two days ago, but now I'm told that the tracker URL (http://debian.christian-leber.de:6969/) is unreachable. How do I keep sharing - can I join another torrent, or something?

Update: the above url works again. I'd still be interested to learn, though: given that I had the ISO downloaded via azureus, how would I have been able to share it through another tracker site?

Tried this on a i810 MoBo and it didn't like using myconfig=scan. It stopped dead in it's track without even starting to boot the kernel( full boot: knoppix26 lang=us myconfig=scan ).

It did have a problem with the i810.ko module and might have ended up with the VESA xserver since it hiccuped a few times before X would start.

You can make it work in English with cheatocdes.

Also, I've got this thing dismantled on my HDD and am remastering it. There should be a tweaked English version that supports nforce2 nvnet (at least for the 2.4 kernel) by this weekend, perhaps sooner.

Hallo world!
First of all greetings to all since this is my first message here. :)
I've tried to install Knoppix 3.4 on my HP laptop but the kernel 2.6 didn't boot, simply the screen was black.
Had anybody the same problem? How can i manage it?
I've reinstalled knoppix 3.3 and it boots properly.
Best greetings!

I had the same problem with booting the 2.6 kernel on a vmware machine, a PIII-1GHz and a PII-300MHz. I don't think it's a knoppix issue, probably the mb chipset or the framebuffer driver is not yet stable. I did however successfully ran it on a P4 laptop.

Some problems eather, I tried this knoppix edition but after having really good experience in the past I was a litlle dissapointed this time, on my system:
Asus p4p800s-e, p2.6 mhz , Ati Radeon 9600, Ingram 17"TFT
Then knoppix26 with or without xmodule=radeon it wouldn`t run
Also not if just knoppix (2.4 kernel) no way, then I plugged in
a nvidia mx440 with or without xmodule=nv it didn`t run,
finally it run when just run knoppix (with 2.4 kernel) xmodule=nv but that wasn`t what I wanted off course, unfortunately then I also found out that it wasn`t be able to found the onboard soundcard AD1985 (should have AC`97 codec)
So here some worser experience after very good experience in the past.

The driver for Promise SATA controllers are not built into the 2.6 kernel. Unfortunately, my experience tells me that this driver *must* be built into the kernel in order to boot off of a drive connected to that controller. In other words, building 'pdc-ultra' as a module will not work.

I hope the powers-that-be add this driver directly into the 2.6 kernel.

I haven't been so lucky. What's the trick?

I'm running 3.4 c't from the CD. When I first ran Captive, it couldn't seem to find the ntoskrnl.exe and ntfs.sys files I copied to my pen drive. It eventually found the files it needed on the ntfs partition, but I still couldn't write to it.

3.4 looks promising! I'll probably like it better once it's weighted more heavily towards KDE and away from Gnome.

You need to unmount the ntfs partitions and remount them as captive-ntfs

- open a console
- run: umount /mnt/yourpartition
- run: mount -t captive-ntfs /dev/yourpartition /mnt/yourpartition

It should work now.

Also, automatic mounting can be achieved my changing the /etc/fstab file so the fstype is always captive-ntfs, not ntfs.

Just worried about breaking things in the process of upgrading. I think I'll do it this way- Spilt my remaster into 3 directories and work on 3.2 in one of them and see how that goes, if that fails, I'll try a second and work on adding a transperant kicker patch, and if that fails, I'll contiune on with 3.15 from where I'm at now.

If I upgrade to 3.2 will it overwrite my kde configurations?

What I'm really worried about is if the iso is used for hdd-installing, will the CVS KDE 3.2 packages wind up breaking down and preventing upgrades through apt-get later on.

Stephen, can you direct me to a thread where you explain the process? I've seen the sources posted and have been told that some packages you have to forcefully overwrite to get installed. I usually don't have too much trouble with apt-get, but if you have any tips or instructions, I could maximize my time and get the iso out that much sooner.

It would be really great to get the first or one of the first custom Cebit iso's and have a functional KDE 3.2 on it.

What I usually do is find the packages that have to be updated for KDE by dpkg -l | grep 3.1.[345] > kde.txt then open the file in Kwrite and cut everything but the package names. Then in the console window become root with su and add the source for 3.2 that you will use in the sources.list and update the apt database and use apt-cache policy package_name on a few packages that will be upgraded and hopefully they have the same version number because it becomes real easy then because all you have to do is paste the same =version_number on the end of the packages in the file so you end up with a file like this (http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/scormier/kde32final.txt) that I make executable and have the -s in the line to simulate the install from the console window, any packages it complains about not being install cut'n'paste on to the end of the file still open in kwrite with a /unstable (that is usually where it is) save the file and run the simulation again when it will complete without warning I go to the console itself and run the script without the -s option to apt-get in the file. But I recently learned that I may be doing it the hard way it appears that with the -t option you can specify the repository url that will be used with apt eg. apt-get -t people.debian.org dist-upgrade I did a simulated run of that earlier today to try and switch to the Debian sources instead of the ones that I am using it will only upgrade the packages that have a larger version (some are still at 3.1.95 in Debian and mine are all 3.2.0) so it appears if you try with 3.1.? installed it should work for you.

When you have the force overwrite I usually change to the /var/cache/apt/archives/ and you will see the list of packages that failed on the screen above at the bottom of the output then you start the command line (dpkg -i --force-overwrite) and type the first few letters of the package and use the TAB key for as much auto-completion as possible and get all the packages that need to be forced on the same command line and hit enter. Sometimes it will tell you to do a apt-get -f install or a configure -a to resolve the install and configure the packages that were missed when the errors happened it usually best after you get done to remove some small package and it's configuration files with the --purge option and reinstall just to make sure you have no unconfigured packages leftover.

Okay, I'm using the other torrent file that was posted on page 2 (I think). But of course, my college has everything bottlenecked, and I've spent the last 40 minutes on a T1 connection and have gotten 0.03mb. Somebody please, help me out here!

Is there any way I can get someone to upload the iso to my ftp site? Seems my college won't let me connect to any of the p2p servers, and the torrent file just won't work period.
Send an email to lordharshmage@yahoo.com if you can help me out here.

My remastered version should be available on Sunday or Monday. My host typically gives out up to 400kb/second download speeds.

Expect- some modification to the desktop UI's, distributed computing clients seti@home and folding@home, karamba, opera (with plugins), firebird, mplayer, nforce2 drivers (and possibly a few other NIC drivers that are not standard for knoppix), fluxbox (not included on cebit edition), english default keyboard layout and language, working knx-hdinstall and knoppix-installer.

As I mentioend above, I'll try to implement KDE 3.2 also, though that may come as an update release sometime next week.

Just stick with the torrent. Leachers at the bottom of the list get lower download speeds, as you move up the list it gets faster. When I started the torrent client was saying it was going to take 78 hours to finish. I left it up overnight and it was finished the next morning. And PLEASE be courtious and leave your client up to seed others (At least untill you have given it to 2 others) i.e. pay it back. I am still seeding at:

wget http://debian.tu-bs.de/knoppix/installer/knx-templates-0.39.tgz
cp /usr/sbin/knoppix-installer .
sudo ./knoppix-installer

this part i get, these are cut and dry prerequisites you need to perform before (and to) install knoppix with the 2.6 kernel to your HD.

At first I could not figure out how you get it to boot 2.6 from a HD install though I just kept getting a kernel panic no init found no matter what init= I passed so I had to boot with the CD and edit lilo to show a prompt to boot the old .kernel. Then I changed to the /boot directory and ran mkinitrd -o linux-2.6.1.gz to make a new initrd then changed the initrd= line in the /etc/lilo.conf [to initrd=/boot/linux-2.6.1.gz and ran /sbin/lilo -v to write lilo and rebooted and Voila! kernel 2.6 on a HD install.

This is where things get a bit hazy for me. I'll be installing Knopping to partition /mnt/hda3 on my machine....

so assuming my installing goes typically the files will be in /dev/hda3 but i won't be able to boot into it. then I must...

boot from the CD ... when you say " edit lilo to show a prompt to boot the old .kernel" are you talking about editing lilo.conf on /mnt/hda3? this is where I get confused. Can you explain this n more detail?

I'm assuming as well you went to the boot directory in the /mnt/hda3 (as opposed to the boot directory from the live cd) to run the command to make the image.

Edit: And I had to add:

## Needed for kernel 2.6
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

To the /etc/fstab as well to get the /sys mount needed for kernel 2.6 the directory /sys already existed so I did no have to create it.

editing lilo.conf and /etc/fstab are cake after that, it's the intermediate steps I'm a bit unclear on. any help would be appreciated.

In other words, do the install...then boot up under the cd and sudo kwrite /mnt/hda3/etc/lilo.conf and add a new boot option in lilo (you can label it Linux24 or something) and set it so that image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.23-xfs and initrd=/boot/initrd.gz. Of course you'll have to run /mnt/hda3/sbin/lilo -v to save the changes. Then reboot and choose the Linux24 and follow the rest of Stephen's directions for making the new initrd and all. It worked well for me.

Stephen

Just after finishing the install with the running 2.6 kernel in a console window.

sudo mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/hda3
sudo kwrite /mnt/hda3/etc/lilo.conf

Then change the file to look like this.

# message=/boot/bootmess.txt
prompt
# single-key
# delay=100
timeout=100

Next.

sudo chroot /mnt/hda3/ /sbin/lilo -v

Then reboot and at the lilo screen choose the LinuxOLD option once booted make the new initrd.

cd /boot
su
Password:
mkinitrd -o linux-2.6.1.gz

Edit lilo again to make the change for it and run /sbin/lilo -v to write to disk and you can now reboot to the new 2.6.1 what the section should look like after editing.

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.1
label=Linux
# initrd=/boot/initrd.gz
initrd=/boot/linux-2.6.1.gz
read-only
# restricted
# alias=1

What is the gtk-qt theme? Is there a debian package for it? I can add it before I finish things up tonight if you give me some details. Sounds like it lets you use kde themes in gnome or on gtk apps???

And, actually something that's really bothering me- I installed a Silver animated xcursor theme. It worked fine in my 3.2 remaster, but on 3.4 cebit, it never shows the double arrows for resizing windows, and also it becomes the default cursor (small, black pointer) if its hovering over a browser or teminal. So it's like obnly 30% functional. :(

I figure its an xcursor lib issue, lack of links in the cursor theme, or some problem with a newer version of qt.

I've searched and found nothing that helps.

Razor-X
02-18-2004, 12:52 AM
Gtk-QT basically translates gtk drawing functions into QT ones, making the Gtk apps look like native QT apps. A must-get for GTK apps. Here's the site link with the source: http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/gtk-qt. Here's a site with the deb (u need to apt-get it): http://qerub.ondska.net/drupal/node/view/9

You can also add
"deb http://kde-debian.org/archive/ workstation-unstable main" to sources.list and do " apt-get install gtk2-engines-gtk-qt

(before this don't forget to "apt-get install gtk-theme-switch" and exec it after you have the deb installed so you can switch the gtk theme)

Hope you can add it. Oh, and test it for segfaults just in case.

Thanks for the info Razor-X. I'll add those packages tonight, and the iso featuring them will be uploaded tomorrow. Perhaps that will fix the odd problem I'm having with the silver xcursor.

A beta without the gtk-qt packages is already uploading to my host and will be available from here- http://overclockix.octeams.com later on tonight (around 9 or 10 PM central standard time).

It's called Overclockix 3.4, and there will be a link for it and an annoucment on that site as soon as the upload completes.

Some highlights- customized desktop look (KDE, fluxbox, and icewm- still working on gnome, xfce, and enlightenment), installer script functionality repaired (partially anyway), added packages- firebird, mldonkey-gui, gftp, ncftp, thunderbird, updated gaim and XMMS to latest unstable versions, samba-mounting script, folding@home service, seti@home client, prime95 client, enlightenment (not tweaked yet), and more...

Default cheatcodes are lang=us screen=1024x768 splash

Razor-X

I'll try to post up the hash a little later after I re-iso my cd and md5 it.

kriko
02-18-2004, 09:03 PM
Hey Arkaine,

If it's not too much of a trouble and you still accept requests, then I was wondering if you could possibly implement the following. Add a new possible value for the "lang" cheatcode, "lang=et" - so by using it the keyboard and xkeyboard would be set to use the Estonian charset. :)

And some questions, it's unclear to me wether your distro is using KDE 3.2 or KDE 3.1.x? Also, is the distro going to use that font which is used in the screenshots that can be found from your site?

Well, anyway this modification of C't Knoppix is definately one sweet piece of work. 8)

Good luck!

Razor-X
02-18-2004, 09:26 PM
I'm pretty sure lang=et changes xkeyboard and keyboard as well, as lang=us changes the keyboard layout to us. One more thing Arkaine, the c't iso sucks with USA time. I keep having to reconfigure everytime the cd starts up. If you can fix that, then great!

And will Overclockix also have kernel 2.6 support or is that removed?

kriko
02-18-2004, 09:28 PM
Unfortunately the Knoppix versions I have tried (versions from 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 series) don't do anything with lang=et; only the Knoppix mod - NordisKnoppix had that option, but it's quite out-dated.

Razor-X
02-18-2004, 09:34 PM
Unfortunately, Estonian language support isnt in Knoppix. It'll all depend whether Arkaine wants to add Estonian support or not. And NordisKnoppix i based on Knoppix 3.2 so its not that old.

kriko
02-18-2004, 09:39 PM
Basically, I don't want the support for the Estonian language, I'd just like that me and my friends would be able to boot up with using the Estonian keyboard (which is alike Swedish and German but has some special characters). When you boot up Knoppix and use the icon on the task bar to change the keyboard layout you can freely pick Estonian. I'd just like that it could be choosen before and from the command line using the "lang" command, if possible.

But if that is too much of a hassle then leave it I guess.

Razor-X
02-18-2004, 10:04 PM
You can change your keyboard style and save your knoppix configuration either to a floppy, or if your cd is multisession, then to that.

arkaine23
02-18-2004, 11:03 PM
Sorry to say, but I removed all language support in order to make room for other applications. I think only enlgish and german remain.

I used firebird .7 as I could not find firefox .8 as a .deb.

More work still lies ahead for this beta. One such thing will be a cron job that syncs time to an internet time server (rather than ntpd which would use like 4mb of ram).

I haven't even changed the default keyboard layout from german to english yet... not sure where that's done. (I don't mean in KDE, I mean at the inital boot screen). So you still have to use shift + 0 to get the =

Looks like I found yet another problem in my kmenu. Lots of stuiff still missing.

Best to wait to download until tomorrow morning.

I haven't even changed the default keyboard layout from german to english yet... not sure where that's done.
Have a look at the /boot/isolinux/isolinux.cfg file. Remove or comment the line "KBDMAP german.kbd" and the default us keyboard layout will be used at startup. You'll likely also want to substitute all occurences of "lang=de" with "lang=us". BTW, kriko, you could stick the appropriate keyboard=xyz and xkeyboard=abc in that file as well, so you'll always default to the keyboard layout of your choice.

arkaine23
02-19-2004, 01:39 AM
Thanks baldyeti!! I saw that line while tinkering in isolinux but wasn't sure if I needed to supply a new keyboardmap file or not.

As for firefox, I will probably update it when I upgrade KDE to 3.2- sometime in the next week or two. Gotta get everything straightened out in this iso first though. Browser plugins were a major pain. I couldn't get flash working in firebird 100% because of of gcc incompatibilites- almost ditched it for opera. The current flash plugin doesn't work with new mozilla-based browsers.

Does anyone know how Knoppix manages to allow su to root without a password? I tried to make an alias in .bashrc for su='sudo su' but it doesn't work. And its only in KDE where the user knoppix is prompted for a password when trying to su.

You need to use visudo to edit the sudoers file and check that the user has an ALL:ALL in the line for the permissions to access applications.

Naturally, I checked this first and found it to be unchanged and set exactly as it should be.

The problem is localized to KDE or perhaps kdm. Unfortunately, most KDE documentation I've come across tells you how to do things with KDE widgets in the Control Center, and not how to directly manipulate config files.

Thanks for the advice, Stephen.

Looks like you just have to use "sudo su" instead of just "su" in this remaster, at least for now.

anyone have a torrent?
The torrent link is still up at http://www.boegenielsen.dk:6969/ (I just started seeding my copy). We also have the anonymous FTP feed at ftp://68.213.18.238/Knoppix/.

Hope this helps!

They both loaded for me...but you can't use insmod with the 2.6 kernel...I was prepared to try installing module-init-tools with a hd-install, but you can't install it either...the installer is missing a file called knx-templates.0.39.tgz. But it's still cool to try out the new kernel and all. :D

Stephen I am having a little troulbe with HD install I followed your post but when I CD to "/boot"and run "mkinitrd -o linux-2.6.1.gz" I get "/usr/sbin/initrd: /dev/fd does not exist". I checked my mount it shows the floppy and the fstav shows /dev/fd.. When I reboot I get the kernel panic "no initrd found" pass initrd=option ore something to that effect. Can anyone get me past this point?

I'm having trouble turning it to english. I got it booted using expert26 and it runs, but it's all in German still. The only things I was able to change was the keyboard to US style and make the creen larger. Where and when do I type the lang=us?? HELP PLEASE!?

P.S. Not a hard Core computer prson, I can do a lot with them though. Plus Knopix/Linux/Unix is still pretty new to me too.

Also howcome my scroll button on my mouse doesn't work?

You would type that right after eg expert26 lang=us you need to use the SHIFT and 0 (zero) keys at the same time to get the =.

I did not get that error however looking at the /usr/sbin/mkinitrd it looks like the only places in the file where I find mention of the /dev/fd is here near the bottom of the file and in the very last line.

ROOT=${croot-$ROOT}
MKIMAGE=${cmkimage-$MKIMAGE}

[ -d /dev/fd ] || {
echo "$PROG: /dev/fd does not exist" >&2
exit 1
}

You may want to you may want to put a exit 0 in the line and see what that does for you. Either that or try mkdir /dev/fd as root to give it what it is looking for.

...hey jdell...

I have tried for the last several days to get into the ftp (68.213.18.238). Everytime I get in and try to download CT, it just sits at ZERO and doesn't move. I've tried with linux and windows machines and with WFTPpro...and get the same problem and result. Do you know what might be wrong. I login anonymously with email address. Do I need to do something else.

PS. ...to everyone...Is anyone else having this problem?

OCix 3.4 is being shared on BT now. We flew through hundreds of GB of bandwidth on my main host in just 24 hours.

I've updated it to fix several issues and its now fully english, including the keyboard map before you boot. I just have to get the latest iso seeded. Unfortunately I'm moving to a new apartment this week, so I'm going to have to take my remastering box to the office to keep the work alive while I move the rest of my LAN and order new cable service.

Mr clark -

When I was on my "corporate" lan and tried this, the same thing occurred, but from home w/ the same FTP client, no problem. BTW - this FTP server is hanging off of a spare DSL line in the office.

I _think_ This has to do with what firewall you are behind _or_ the FTP client you are using.

There have been a lot of people connecting to the server, so I don't know which it is.

I'm actually out of town for the next few days so I won't be in the office to check up on that machine. But as soon as I get back I'll test it further and see if I can figure it out.

Sorry 'bout that.

After typing "knoppix26" at the boot prompt all I get is a black screen.
It works fine in the virtual machine "MS Virtual PC 2004", though.

My specs:
P4 3,0GHz
Asus P4P800
MSI GF4 Ti4200
2x256mb RAM

any ideas? :)

Hey, i'll donate $50 to Knoppix LIVECD with ATI drivers working out of the box.
My Radeon9800Pro is still waiting for distro that will work with it. RedHat9 fails on installer, MandrakeMove crashes with no X, Knoppix 3.3 fails (no driver i suppose), Berry 0.36 - no go.

Who will win? ;)

Knoppix26 dont recognizes the serial mouse. No problem with kernels 2.4 (both versions have this drawback, Knoppix34-CT and Overclockix34-beta)

Hey guys, if someone at Knopper has good will, please update/reinsert "VLC" pachage..
The last iso I've seen doesn't has the pachage inside anymore, but in the previous there it was..

So, please, put vlc 7 in the new next release of Marvellous Knoppix distro..

best regards

Seems like you're probably getting a kernel panic before the framebuffer initializes. Try starting with linux26 vga=normal, and see if there's any error messages.

Usually PnPBios seems to be the culprit, so try adding pnpbios=off, also.

Looks like someone at Bellsouth thinks I didn't pay my DSL bill... so the FTP site is down until they fix it. I hate when they do stuff like this... Sorry y'all. I'll post when it is back up.

Bios to set not pnp and then knoppix26 vga=normal
(my specs:p4 asus p4p800 nvidia mx440 but also black screen
after try startup knoppix26)
and get after a whole lot off lines (ACPI:PCI Interrupt Link
etc etc Start Linux plug and play etc)
at end

Call Trace
Code:Bad EIP value
<0> Kernel panic: Attempted to Kill init!

Any ideas??

I finally get this release via bittorrent and could launch the kernel 2.6 pretty easilly.

But I have a question about the packages:
Where Kdevelp is gone ? I couldn't find it on this version.

Hope it will be available in the final release.

Anyway thanks to the people who shared the v3.4 with us.

New Overclockix 3.4 remaster hit the streets yesterday. has some patched up installers to avoid some of the problems in the original cebit 3.4. Also has some user-requested packages like firefox, thunderbird, mplayer, the newer gimp 2.0, karamba, and many more. Has been apt-get upgraded to unstable distribution for newest packages available. Highly customized desktops, and KDE now at 3.2.2. Openoffice removed to make space. You can apt-get install openoffice.org for hdd-installs. kdei18n multi-language stuff has been removed for space also. This thing is defaults to English (KDE and Keyboard)!

http://overclockix.octeams.com

The beta from a few months ago had bugs in the kmenu and kicker, but in the new release these things have been fixed.

It is available by Bittorrent due to popularity. My hosts get hammered otherwise. We did almost 150 d/l's in the first 24 hours since distrowatch took notice of the new release.

here's a pic- Note: it shows firebird, but i have upgraded to firefox since this pic was taken.

You can't if running from CD. /usr is not writeable. If you install to hard drive, then you can do it as root. run the command-

su
and then enter root's password

FYI, I was able to boot with the default( knoppix24 ) kernel but the v2.6 kernel( knoppix26 ) would not boot and looked like it was "sticking" on my CDROM. I've got a SCSI cdrom with two IDE disks( one on HPT366 ). Maybe the AIC7xxx.o driver isn't ready/loading but the last line was saying that it was looking at /dev/hde for the CDROM and that was wrong.

It did seem like KDE was a bit quicker when I ran the 2.4.x-xfs kernel.

I just tried the latest iso( 2004-05-17 ) and this still fails trying to look for the SCSI CDROM on the IDE bus( hde ).

Is there nobody else running a combined SCSI / IDE system( having a SCSI CDROM) with this problem?
