Is there a way to shutoff only certain hardware? manly the hardrive because this hard drive is old and locks up sometimes during reboot if it hasn't stop spining in a while. Plus its just a waste of energy seeing that knoppix is live.

So is there any way? (hardisk has two partitons)

Assuming the drive supports it and is the first HD in the system then open a console window (clam shell icon on the taskbar) and type in sudo hdparm -S 2 /dev/hda then enter key this will put the drive into standby mode in 10 seconds.
