ok so i downloaded the 4496 nvidia drivers, hit Ctrl Alt F1 and tried to run the file, but it SAYS THAT X IS STILL Up. I don't understand what i have to do to make X DISAPEr.
What do i have to do to get the nvidia drivers to install???
is there a guide out there? i looked in the Search, but i can't find anything.
thanks

1) You should try the newest driver available here: kano.mipooh.net
install-nvidia-5336-debian.sh
2) You should be able to run it from a virtual terminal.
3) I had to use the 4496 driver as the 5336 failed to work correctly. (killed X) until I tried the 5328 verison which works great with XFree86 4.3.0-2 on my nforce1 mobo.

/etc/init.d/kdm stop will stop the X server but you are probably better of getting the script mentioned above it does all the work for you. You have to use chmod +x install-nvidia-5336-debian.sh to make it executable and then ./install-nvidia-5336-debian.sh to run from a console login preferably.
