Can anyone suggest a good book for a newbie like me on the basics of Linux/Unix.

linux cookbook
(if you've a HD install you can apt-get these (rute is called rutebook in the depositories).
There's also a nice HOWTO called (something like) DOS/Win to Linux.
If you're not running a HD install you can google for them (or rute is published in hard copy).
