Ok, so my laptop is kind of dead. Well not dead, more like comatose. I got a few boot utils to where I can get in and view my partition, its still there with all my files. I was wondering if, and how, I can access my burner to get my files off there before formatting. Especially since I only have a DVD/CDRW combo drive, will i be able to take out the Knoppix CD and put in an RW?

If you have 1 Gig of RAM you can use the toram cheatcode.
You might want to check out feather linux at: http://featherlinux.berlios.de
That one you can run from a USB stick and free the burner, it should also be able to load into RAM.

You cannot take the CD out. But:

If you have a network port and a friendy LAN to plug into you can boot knoppix and copy the files off to a server. Or if only a dial-up moden, you can boot knoppix and then FTP the files to the web somewhere?

If you can get someone to put a copy of flonix onto a USB memory card/stick, you can boot from that - it's only 61Mb and lets you do most anything that a full size OS will do, incl. I think, burn CDs : http://www.flonix.com/

what file system does the HD use? If its a FAT system then you can use the tohardrive cheatcode (thats not it, check the cheatcode text on cd) to write the file to the hardrive and boot with it.

yo have to have atleat 700 megas avaiable on the hardrive though.

Another would be a PXE boot. YOu would need another computer to load the knoppix-terminal server then hope that you laptop supports netwrok PXE booting.

Yet another would be what Stu suggested, to transfer the files over ethernet or internet to another computer YOu got quite a few options though most probably won't work.
