when i try to install the newest gaim verison (i somewhere read in this forum i should try the mandrake) it comes up with some errors.

<x/Desktop/gaim-0.75-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm';echo RESULT=$?
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm
RESULT=1

here it stops.
how can i upgrade the gaim already installed on Knoppix 3.2?

apt-get -t unstable install gaim
this one isn't updating it to the newest version...

Thanks!
Arne

This doesn't directly answer your question, but I'd suggest trying Kopete which is in KDE 3.2 (unless you need a particular protocol that Kopete does not have).

Should be in the menu, otherwise from a shell (normal user) type "kopete &".

I prefer Gaim, but the gf insisted on being able to use the Yahoo network (which Gaim currently cannot do without a patch from somewher) so I tried out Kopete. Not bad; actually pretty good.

So I'm using Kopete, at least until a newer and better working version (= connect to Yahoo) comes out.

HTH

p.s. I thought that to use an RPM, you first had to ocnvert it to .deb using 'Alien' or something???

thanks for your help!
i tried alien, but it didn't either work with .deb files, because i had to refresh the listing of the installed packages, and now there was gaim, so i could say uninstall and tell him to get the newest version

have a nice week!
