I can log in as root but not as user Knoppix. when i try to log in as knoppix all this crap happens:

This is the first error that pops up;

There was an error setting up interßprocess communications for KDE. The message returned bz the szstem wasÖ

Could not read network connection list

//.DCOP server_superubercool_0

Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!

2nd window that pops up:

The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE:

No write access to $Home directory(/)

KDE is unable to start

and another popup window comes up after that saying:

Could not start ksmserver. Check your installation.

and ideas on how to fix this would be good, thanks.

Assuming that this is a Debian style install, then it's probably a good idea to get rid of user knoppix.

Just do this:

as root, select Kmenu > System > Kuser

and just use kuser to set up a user with a more suitable name.
Add this user to all the groups Knoppix was a member of (again, use Kuser).

If you really want knoppix user back you should compare the settings between your "new" user and Knoppix: what was wrong should become apparent quite quickly. My guess is that Kde simply doesn't have write access to either /home or /home/knoppix.

BTW, it isn't "crap", it's a useful error message.

yes yes, it is useful i know. but I'm just bitter. I tried deleting the user knoppix before this and it just force closes the kuser program, and the user knoppix doesn't get deleted oh nevermind i just fixed that. i changed the UID of knoppix from 1000 to 1002... that let me delete it. how odd..
