I am a complete newbie to Linux, and had done a HDD install of Knoppix 3.3, alongside Windows and Knoppix does not recognise my soundcard - an Aztech PCI338 A3D, which I beleive is a Soundblaster clone.
Any pointers or suggestions?

Try /etc/init.d/alsa-autoconfig as root in a console window (clam shell icon on taskbar) then test the sound if it works then add this line near the bottom of the file /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh to have the volume default levels set on boot.
aumix -w 75 -v 75

Hey I've got that same problem, I've tried alsa config and tried XMMS, it returned that there was no such thing as /dev/dsp.
My soundcard is an AC97
