I need to recover some files from an old fileserver with a corrupted hard drive. The copy of Red Hat on the hard drive won't boot because of the corrupted disk, and the computer only has 24mb of ram.

Recent copies of Knoppix won't boot, they simply crash after the boot splashscreen. Is there someplace I can find an old copy of Knoppix, or some way I can make it boot on this system?

You could try knoppix 2 to see if it will boot to the console if not you want to check around for some other variant like Damn Small Linux (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/).
