One of the problems with Roxio's Easy CD Creator is their Direct CD format utility. It runs as a background service in XP. I usually kill unecessary services and this was one of them.

1. Start > Run then type "msconfig"

2. Go to the StartUp tab and insure Direct CD is a Startup item (i.e. checked.").

3. Restart the PC.

4. Run Easy CD Creator. Select File > Record CD from CD image.

5. The software wants to find a .cif file by default. Use the pull-down menu and select .iso image files. Now browse to the directory you have the Knoppix .iso image in and select it.

6. The Record CD Setup screen appears. Accept the default settings and click Start Recording. When you chose File > Record CD from CD image it automatically set the CD to be bootable and extracts the files as it writes the CD.

That fixed the problem I was having. My error was in just copying the .iso file to the CD and setting the ISO9660 file system from the CD Properties menu then burning the CD. That will not work - ever.

7. Insure your BIOS is set to boot from the CD then restart with the CD in the drive. Viola!

I'm using a Compaq Presario 725 laptop.
