Ok I need some help here

While doing an apt-get upgrade I got this message

What I want to know is, I am guessing that there are new packages available
that will upgrade my system to the newest debian/KDE woody available.

So if I use apt-get dist-upgrade will this erase the 125 packages,
and then reinstall all those packages automatically?

If not how do I get those packages back on my system to keep my system the way it is just upgraded?

Im just a little paranoid cause I dont want to screw up my system.

So if possible could someone just walk me through their experiences using
apt-get dist-upgrade?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Luis

Your question seems fairly obvious, but since I've been known to ask a few slap-your-head-after-getting-the-answer questions I'll help you out:

1 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 125 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/327kB of archives. After unpacking 332kB will be used.

This is the important part.

"1 packages upgraded" - this means there's a newer version on an install program or library on the server. If you choose to continue, apt-get will automatically download and install the new program or library over the old one.

"0 newly installed" - pretty obvious. There's nothing new that you don't already have.

"0 to remove" - no packages will be removed from your system at this time. This is what you were worried about?

"125 not upgraded" - these packages are current.

"Need to get 0B/327kB of archives. After unpacking 332kB will be used." - This is the total file size of the packages to be grabbed and then how much space they will take up after installation.

Oh, and if you've just installed from the CD you should first do an apt-get update to makes sure you list of package versions is current.

by the way... I know that it is going to remove things.. but why?

Did you change your "default release" in /etc/apt/apt.conf to "stable" by chance?

It's probably trying to remove the packages that were in testing/unstable to bring you back to a default Debian Woody installation.

I know I had to go through all sorts of removal of newer programs to install older versions when I wanted to move to KDE3.1/Woody from Knoppix.

You'll probably end up breaking something doing this, though... it took about an hour of playing around to bring my system back. See: http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=804

thanks for the post and the link... I think I may just wait a few more days(weeks) until I am more comfortable, and things have been worked out better.....

**** UPDATE *****

I decided to just go ahead and agree to the apt-get dist-update.

it removed all the files listed and installed three others. then I kept doing
apt-get dist update till it told me that there were no new programs to update.

then a did apt-get -f install to put in any files needed.

then apt-get install kdebase kdm ... (all the other files needed)

I am back up and running. all of my settings are still here in one piece.

loving linux more and more.

Hmm, that seemed easy enough. Maybe I'll give this a try. Did you alter sources.list for this?

I use these sources for KDE3.1

deb http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde stable main
deb-src http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde stable main

hope that helps

After a lot of playing around, I was able to update to 3.1. Thanks all.
