debix can create a live filesystem from any existing linux system or create a fresh system with debootstrap. When creating a live filesystem from scratch, "knoppix like autodetection features" can be included.

Is this the way to go?

(I imagine a website where you can customize and select which packages your Knoppix ISO will contain...)

http://debix.alioth.debian.org/

(I didn't test it yet. Perhaps it`s not yet "there", but the idea should be reconsidered by the Knoppix crowd at least!)

EDIT: The debianization of Knoppix is already being considered under "debootstrap" at debian-custom, http://people.debian.org/~tille/debian-med/talks/200402_malaga/

I did test the lvm-technique that is behind debix with a custom kernel.

It did crash, did not work with iso-files just ext3, which are much slower.

At the moment:

No way to go for Knoppix.

definitely sounds like an interesting idea. don't know why you wouldn't just use a compressed ISO loopback FS like knoppix does.

Hi,

could you explain a bit what that LVM2 is about in this case ? I have written a shell script that can be called at bootup(for debian anyway) that can transform any debian based system to readonly(thus good for CD distribution) but like to learn what this project is about especially the LVM2 thing. Thanks.

Actually, this already exists outside the Knoppix world:

http://on-x.ca/html/rxlinux.html

* go to the web site and sign up for free

* choose the packges you want. If you select "source from the cd", the package will be included on the iso. Othewise, it will be downloaded at boot time.

* click on "Build and download iso image"

* now you can burn the iso image on a CD and boot from it.
