I'm very new to linux infact this is my 1st time ever tryin linux out. knoppix is the holy grail for noobs like me. heres my problem.

1. when i ran knoppix from cd i herd a female coice saying "initializing.."
after i HD installed Knoppix i don't hear that anymore, however my sound does work.

2. when i set up sound themes under root they works fine. when i try to use sound themes for a new user( that belongs the Audio group + every other group) it don't work but i so have sound.

3. I searched on this forum & other sites about linux "saying i should delete root user & group" how do i make a new su so i can delete root

4. how do i set up my 3dfx voodoo 2 card with libglide2 ?

thanks in advance

Welcome to the Linux community :)

1. You only hear the (annoying) female voice when booting from CD. Try installing Knoppix and experience a world of difference :)

2. You can choose how Knoppix/KDE should behave when you install Knoppix to harddisk.

3. Under no circumstances should you remove the root account. This is very important since you use this account to install applications, configure the time, configure hardware, etc.

4. Try searching this forum for 3Dfx Voodoo 2 :?

Happy computing :)

As noted above, you won't hear that "initializing startup sequence"/"initializing shutdown sequence" clip after installing Knoppix to your hard drive.

KDE's sound server isn't turned on by default; have you turned it on? In the Control Center, go to Sound and Multimedia; click on Sound System; and check the "Start aRts soundserver on KDE startup" box. Then click the "Test Sound" button; it should work.
