Lots of questions from a beginner

I managed to get Knoppix installed and running on my hard drive and even got several small debian packages installed. But how does one install a download like a display driver. Right now I am running the generic nv driver that was installed with Knoppix but I suspect that the n'Vidia driver would be better for my GE Force 4 card. How is a*.tar file installed?

Can someone recommend some good resources for a beginner that knows almost nothing?

a tar is like a zip. Use ark to open it.
