changing syslinux.cfg

well hey,
i changed syslinux.cfg to set the default boot to noscsi, but i'm pretty sure the changes haven't taken. do i need to do anything besides the following:

1) umount boot.img
2) copy boot.img to the directory where it puts the filesystem

do i need to recompile anything? i'm having this problem with a harddrive install and a cd-rom. the changes never seem to work.
