Knoppix is an operating system just like dos, well not like dos but they're both OS:s. So installing on an empty harddisk is no problem. Linux in general even has some commands in common with DOS like mkdir and stuff. You might want to read a couple of FAQs in the Docs section and check out: http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html

herponen,

As Markus said,

Knoppix is a full fledged Operating System, just like DOS and Windows, just one differance...

Knoppix can boot, and run, fully from the CD, whereas, Windows will boot from the CD, but only long enough for you to get it installed on your hard drive.

The Windows CD is intended only to boot so it can install its Operating System, not so that you can run it from the CD. Knoppix, on the other hand, was designed to boot, and run from the CD, it also can be used to install the Operating System onto your hard drive, as well.

Knoppix was released on the CD for both using the CD for booting and running the OS from the CD, and also for installing the OS to your hard drive. Which gives it a "one up" on Windows, it can do two things, versus Windows only being able to do one.

Hope this helps,
Cuddles
