xwindows not working

i've tried the usual...
fb1280x1024 xmodule=ati screen=1280x1024 xvrefresh=60
fb1280x1024 xmodule=ati noddc screen=1280x1024 xvrefresh=60
fb1280x1024 xmodule=vesa screen=1280x1024 xvrefresh=60
fb1280x1024 xmodule=vesa noddc screen=1280x1024 xvrefresh=60
knoppix xmodule=ati screen=1280x1024 xvrefresh=60
knoppix xmodule=ati noddc screen=1280x1024 xvrefresh=60

and i've substituted screen size all the way down to 800x600
craps out every time

well if yousearch you will find that dell computers have alot of problems.

For your case try noagp if that doesn't work try failsafe (don't put knoppix infront)

if failsafe works then you just have to troubleshoot.

searched, followed various suggestions and solutions that worked for others
seems like i have the horrid combination of the dell FP display, dell BIOS and ATI Rage 128 issues

i'll keep trying

You tried all of that just to get Knoppix working? That's disgusting and I think it shows signs of some serious addiction to Linux or at least a grave desire to rid yourself of M$.
