problem started with 3.8 and up including 4.0.
My NIC is a Intel 21143. If I replace it with a
FA310TX that I had laying around I can boot up
all the way. Maybe some can pass the info on.

I have a BIOSTAR U8668 D Socket 478 VIA P4M266A Micro ATX Intel Motherboard which had the same problem on boot , hanging on DHCP broadcast.
I used the "knoppix nopcmcia" cheat code with 3.8 and it now works just fine !
The PCMCIA is a laptop slot , and this is a Desktop MoBo without a PCMCIA slot ... Who'd a thought !
hy,
i have the same problem here with a intel/dec 21143 based nic [on an older p3/intel 440bx board] ... it does not matter if i use knoppix 3.8.x/3.9/4.0dvd ... using ,,nodhcp'' and manually configuring the network interface is the only working solution 4 me - at the moment ... the system even freezes if i start the dhcp-client manually from a root shell within the running/working system.
Wonder if DVD ver 4.0 will work?
I like my intel card better
