Many thanks Werner. I did all the "without burning it to DVD " post you suggested and all seemed to be great (intel btw) until the final command which gave:

Am i missing something? I have just downloaded ver 7.6.1, checked it's MD5 & SHA1 sums, burned to a USB drive using the DD command (inc ending with a SYNC) and then tried to boot it ... failed!! ...

Thanks, however, i did realise this. I have previously used "flash disk install" to a make the usb bootable copy of 7.2.0 i had on cd.
As i mentioned in my original post, i used the flash-knoppix...
i had seen the different methods of flash install, however, i had booted from an older vers of knoppix (7.2.0) that i already had on a pen/thumb/usb/flash/?? drive and i wanted to "burn" the latest...
