Utu: Many thanks for the 'quote' from your friend in Germany! It works fine. In fact only 'xkeyboard=gb' is enough to do the job, except for one missing key (the UK 'pound currency' symbol).

All I want to know is how to get back to the keyboard layout that worked fine for me in the past with 'lang=uk' at the boot: prompt. Can you suggest another Knoppix forum where I might ask the...
Yes, but the earlier Knoppix gave me a perfectly correct British keyboard when I entered 'knoppix lang=uk' at the boot: prompt, and it no longer does it (lang=uk makes the keyboard dead, not...
Thanks for the idea but I was hoping that there was some LINUX command that would do the same as the Knoppix 'lang=uk' cheatcode which worked before - I suppose that somewhere inside the box there is...
I downloaded 6.4.3 to replace a very old Knoppix I used for many years, and was dissapointed to find that 'lang=uk' no longer works (the keyboard is dead if I try it). This is a nuisance for me here...
For the information of anyone else reading this, I did get the above idea working. But because there were some bad sectors on the HD, the 'dd' command failed on these and corrupted the filing system....
In case anyone is interested, I downloaded the latest 6.4.3 and the transfer rate to the USB drive is much faster. It depends on the blocksize. With 512 bytes it was 1.1MB/s and with 32kbytes it was...
I just downloaded KNOPPIX_V6.4.3CD-2010-12-20-EN.iso and burned a CD.
At the boot: prompt I enter 'knoppix lang=uk nosmp'. These worked OK with an older Knoppix that I have used for some years. ...
I am new to LINUX/Knoppix and I am hoping to use it to make a backup/restore system for a 5-year-old Windows XP PC (see my other thread). I am posting here because I have found that in Knoppix my USB...

Thanks for your information again. I understand everything you say. I now have a 250GB USB drive and it IS the same 'geometry' as the main HD (255 heads, 64 sectors/track) but I think this...

Many thanks for your reply. It was very useful.
Your suggestion to clone the whole of hda is a good idea, to catch any corruption of the MBR and partition table. My idea to copy only...

Many thanks for your detailed reply. Before I answer (with more questions!), I think the start and end of your reply were missing. I also saw two replies but I think they are identical....
Hi:
Having just spent a week restoring Windows XP on my laptop, I have come to Knoppix.net to learn how to be able to do it better next time (without any help from Microsoft who will have stopped...
