I partitioned the USB HDD using Gparted. I made the first partition (primary) as 8Gb and flagged it as bootable. I then used flash-knoppix to install to the USB HDD. When I rebooted the computer,...
By the way, I tried partitioning the drive so that the first partition was 8Gb, to avoid any BIOS limitations, and still was not able to get the drive to boot.
Well, I am about to my wits end trying to install Knoppix to an external (USB) hard drive. I believe the
problem is that the drive is too large and my computers BIOS will not boot a FAT32 device...
I have successfully booted from an ISO file on my ntfs drive. At the Knoppix boot prompt I types "knoppix bootfrom=/dev/sda1/K.iso" where sda1 was the
hard drive designator as seen by Knoppix and...
Werner,
I access the BIOS by hitting the DEL key. Once in the BIOS there are no actions available with
the F8 or F10 key. Once in the BIOS I can select Advanced BIOS Features > Boot Sequence...
I found a solutio although not the one I wanted. As I had stated before, the USB flash drive used to show up in the boot list, but no longer does. I have not found a solution to that problem. ...
Interestingly enough, when I look at my hardware in Windows XP Device Manager, the USB flash drive shows up as a hard drive. I ran TestDisk and it shows that the USB flash drive is bootable. HMMM!...
I have gone through my BIOS many times. I have reset to factory defaults and then set the values as they should be. I have cleared the CMOS several times.
Just can't seem to get it working. I...
Werner,
By the way, my version of Knoppix is 6.7.0 . If you are using 6.7.1 that may account for some of the differences.

John
Werner,
I am attaching the disk info as gotten using ls -R -la /media/sdf1 (that is my drive designation).
As you can see the files are in a different order and there are other differences. ...
Is there an alternate procedure for installing Knoppix 6.7 to my flash drive? Perhaps the Knoppix-install program is not functioning correctly.
John
I bought a new USB flash drive. Went through the procedure and have the same results. TestDisk shows essentially the same warnings. The USB
flash drive is not showing up in the boot list as...
It would appear that the flash drive may not be getting formatted correctly so maybe the drive is bad.
I assume that the warnings I referred to earlier are indicating that the device is not properly...
In response to utu , the 3.6 was a LiveCD. After booting it I was able to install to a flash drive. Please see my post regarding warnings when I used TestDisk (Windows) to look at the drive.
...
You might be right. I just ran TestDisk, in Windows, and there are several warnings. They warnings and messages are as follows:
Warning: Incorrect number of heads/cylinder 124 <FAT> != 255 <HD>...
Well, in the past, I was able to see the device in the boot priority list. It no longer shows up in that list. I have reset the BIOS to factory defaults but that did not help. I also tried to use...
I have been trying to install Knoppix 6.7 to a 4GB flash pen drive (Kingston). I have gone through
the procedure many times (>10) and have not been able to get a working system. I have tried the...
Well, it is either a hardware or BIOS problem. I connected the drive to a friends laptop and was able to successfully boot to Knoppix 6.7.
Thanks for all who have looked at this post.
I booted KNOPPIX 6.7 from the live CD and then downloaded a program called TestDisk.
I used TestDisk to check the USB hard drive that fails to be detected in my bios and can see
that the primary...
Today, I have tried the following:
I downloaded Knoppix 6.2 and booted with that CD.
I re-partitioned the USB hard drive with the first partition having size 32GB just in case the size
was...
I booted Knoppix 6.7 from the live CD. I selected the Flash Install program and selected the 160GB external USB hard drive for installation. I clicked on the button to authorize format and install...
This is very strange. I have tried installing Knoppix 6.7 on both a 160GB USB hard drive and on
a 4GB flash pen drive. Both of these devices were seen in the BIOS boot list prior to installing...
