Great! What's the trick to getting KDE3 installed on Knoppix? LXDE *is* actually very nice, but it would take a long time to get it set up like KDE3, so why not just use KDE3?
Thanks - every time I try to do something KDE4 can suddenly turn frustrating - and they seem to have an "always decentralize" sort of rule. It used to be that there were just two places to go to...
Is there a way to get KDE3 on Knoppix 6.2? I'm reading the Knoppix Hacks book, and it keeps referring to things like drive icons on the desktop and all the easy configurations that are gone with...
OK, I reinstalled to my SD drive using the flash install utility - I'll test to see if it seems any faster than when I used the HD install to install to the SD drive. I think SD drives should be...
Thanks - I did try the flash-install utility, but I thought there were some issues with adding applications and keeping system configuration(s) in that case since the installation never actually gets...
After installing Knoppix 6.2 to HD (an SD drive, actually, but using the HD install utility) it seems oddly latent at times, as if it's still decompressing, recompressing kernel components or...
Oops - forgot - linux is case sensitive!
I installed Knoppix 6.2 (from DVD) to my 16GB SD drive, but can't get KDE up and running. I tried setting desktop=KDE in the GRUB menu.lst, but I still don't get KDE. I've been googling around, but...
Thanks - this makes sense. Now I'm deliberating on exactly what kind of install to do. I also tried desktop=kde but LXDE still comes up.
Thanks, so, when installing new software in Knoppix, the executables, libraries, etc. that I install go into the "/" file system, and only personal settings are stored in the persistent file - is...
Ah, got it! During the boot when you specify a size for the persistent file (sans the "MB" I was mistakenly appending), then it asks if you want to encrypt it... THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe that's my problem!! I put "2000 MB" since the example shows the "MB" - I'll try again... Does the user always stay "knoppix" or do I create a user "patti" like in other distros?
Maybe I forgot to request an encrypted install when I did the to-SD install applet in the Live DVD? I don't remember seeing anything in the applet for a default home either. Maybe I have to do that...
Hmmm... didn't think I needed to do a persistent store since I have a dedicated SD drive to knoppix. So I gave it a file size during boot in the option to make a persistent settings store file, but...
Thanks!!
Well, I don't like KDE4 - it seems too "dumb-down" from KDE3, so I'll stick with LXDE I guess. I was hoping for a better organization of the menus. I guess I could do it by hand, right?
"it's designed to run without passwords" - right, but the problem is more complicated than that, for instance, if you use the menu system to start the "Users and Groups" applet, it won't let you...
Does Debian have the hardware-detection and setup capabilities of Knoppix? Knoppix 6.2.1 did an amazing job of finding everything on my laptop.
Knoppix 6.2.1 x86_64 works INCREDIBLY well on my ProBook!! It even set up the WiFi and 1600x900 display (with hardware accel.) correctly. So I did an install. I'm surprised because I never got...
I did a full install of 6.2.1 from DVD to an unused 8GB SD drive using the "install to flash drive" utility from a live boot. All seems well, but I keep running afoul of the need for user "knoppix"...
