No, Knoppix doesn't take care of '/etc/init.d/knoppix-startx-ORIG' and '/etc/init.d/knoppix-autoconfig-ORIG'.
Have a look at '/etc/inittab'.
In this case I wouldn't use a Live Linux as Knoppix with all his limitations. I would prefer for example Debian.
Why not read- and writable? I suppose you are using a "poor man's install.
You can use gnome-screenshot from the menu.
The nm-applet is already active → the icon on the right side of the panel.
Now you can use left mouseclick → "Disconnect" below your existing connection.Use "Edit connections.." from nm-applet → "Edit" your connection → "General" → disable "Automatically ..".
Why not install it by yourself?
aptitude install ksnapshot

KNOPPIX_V7.7.1DVD-2016-10-22-EN.iso is available via Torrents and Mirrors.
To install 7.6.1 to USB you can use the ISO without burning it to DVD and then make your flash disk installation. Using the DD command you'll don't get the necessary change from Isolinux to Syslinux.
With "ISO install to HD" you don't need the cheatcode "knoppix" or "knoppix64"; therefore you have to omit this cheatcode in this installation mode.. You already did your decision which Kernel you...
Did you ever test the RAM with memtest86 for some hours?

If testdisk didn't show you some of the content within the data partition of Knoppix, there may be a total loss. Rebuild of the partition table cannot restore anything of the content.
I don't understand. You moved your "very own files" to "an external HD", but you cannot see them on the external HD? How do you know, "move" has been successfull?
The uncompressed size of Knoppix V7.6.1 (without 'KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX1') is 9500 MB. To strip it down to CD size of 770 MB compressed (2200 MB uncompressed) you have to remove stuff of nearby 7300 MB...

Which Knoppix version are you using? Still V7.2.0? If so, this version is from summer 2013 and outdated. The current release is V7.6.1 (Jan 2016).
And by the way - never try "apt-get upgrade"...

If you did a HD installation of Knoppix you have to edit '/boot/grub/menu.lst'. Append at the end of the line "kernel /boot/vnlinuz ..." your wanted cheatcode. By the way, if you know the available...
I've tested KN...iso.md5 and KN...iso.md5.asc for KNOPPIX_V7.2.0DVD-2013-06-16-EN.iso on this site; they are ok. But after download you have to verify the md5sum of the ISO against the md5sum within...
KNOPPIX_V7.2.0CD-2013-06-16-DE.iso and KNOPPIX_V7.2.0CD-2013-06-16-EN.iso has been the latest CD versions and I fear, Prof Knopper will never do again a new CD version.
