I've been trying to get midi working also, but I don't think anybody has gotten midi working under knoppix (liveCD anyway). I'm sure midi can get working using ALSA drivers and a harddisk install, but I dont know what kind of hoops you have to jump thru to get it working.
Anybody who's gotten midi working please chip in!

Wierd...
I work on both lice CD and HD install. I have the same sound card as daviskacer. I never have to do anything.
It works just fine for me!

YOU GOT MIDI WORKING???? ON LIVE CD????
Do you mean to say you have /dev/sequencer configured? Were you able to run Rosegarden, using the external midi ports? If so, you're the FIRST I've heard to get it working!
I heard that Rosegarden requires ALSA, so did you use the ALSA cheatcode?
Does that soundcard have midi built into it, as opposed to a USB midi interface?
If you could please share all the specifics you went through (such as what knoppix version, cheatcodes, etc) that would be AWESOME!

I've got the same problem with my Realtek AC'97 Audio sound card (Knoppix distro version 4.0, HD installation).
When I try to open a midi file with playmidi I get the same message.
So I went to check on KInfoCenter>Sound and I found:
Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Now, I configured my sound card using but the only thing I had to do was selecting my sound card, and everything else went on automatically.
My question is: how can I configure my midi device?
thanks for your help ^__^

It's look like your motherboard come with ac97 sound chip built in...
For others, get timidity
-
I tried also to use timidity, here's what I get
Code:
mmanu@knoppixbox:~$ timidity /home/mmanu/downloads/Crawling.mid
/etc/timidity/freepats.cfg: No such file or directory
timidity: Can't read any configuration file.
Please check /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg
Even though it looks like a problem relative to the configuration file, I think the problem lays in the configuration of my sound card. But I'm not that expert.
Any other suggestion?
thanks ^__^
Update:
Well, I think I was wrong (obviously ^__^), after I downloaded freepats, I could hear the file, but still the software I really want to use does not work. I really would like to use Rosegarden4, but I can hear no sound. I thought the problem was my sound card not being able to play midi sounds, but since timidity works, I don't know what I can think about...

KDE Sound System and another sound server
You may need to disable the KDE Sound System; KMenu -> Control Center -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound System , in order that another sound server is able to use the configured sound devices.

Thanks for your advice,
but after I made sure that the Sound System was disabled, I tried again with no result...

Ok, I found out myself, here's the solution:
http://rosegarden.sourceforge.net/tu...chapter-2.html
hope it can be helpful for sombody else as well
