I guess you need to install samba for that issue.
Perhaps setting up a ftp-server is an alternative?
i got my system up and running. i installed knoppix 3.3. now i would like to share all of /dev/hdb1, and make it readable from windows xp professional computers in the workgroup MSHOME. could someone tell me how is that feasible with knoppix? i do not want any password protection. only read access for the users to my /dev/hdb1.

ok and how do i do the whole process?
In most cases there are several ftp-server preinstalled.
Security is the most important issue here. But if it's not an issue for you, you can start looking in
(corrected
/etc/inetd.conf
If there is a line, starting:
#ftp stream tcp nowait root ...
uncomment it.
Now look if inetd is already running:
ps ax | grep inetd
If not, start it in runlevel 4 (multiuser + network).
read:
man in.ftpd
carefully - there is a paragraph describing the 'chroot' command, so make the home of ftp /mnt/hdb1 (or mount hdb1 to /home/ftp and make that the home of ftp).

sorry! In my last post, I accidentially told, you start the ftp-daemon in /etc/fstab.
That is - shortly spoken - 01000010011101010110110001101100011100110110100001 10100101110100 !
Of course it is /etc/inetd.conf.
I corrected the post, to prevent mistakes.
Sorry again.
