Greetings everyone,
I have recenteley bought myself a secondhand Panasonic Toughbook CF-27 , I really like it. It runs Knoppix 4.0.2 CD fine apart from the frambbuffer settings not being properly recognised. It seems to run in 1024x768 or something like that causing the text console to dissapear of to the right and bottom of the screen, Everything is fine in X at 800x600. A workarround is to give the parameter vga=normal at the boot prompt bu this makes the console dispaly in 640x480 mode. I would like to have the console at 800x600 mode but dont know if this is possible. Has anybody any idea how I could do this. I have tries fb800x600 at the boot prompt but this seems to have no effect. Knoppix is great, keep up the good work. Regards, dave

something back. I'm work for a ICT firm in Holland and we are also TASC so I'm into Toshiba laptops. So here is a
list of Toshiba laptops I've use Knoppix on. Also have a look at http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/
Loads of helpfull info on Toshiba laptops here. I've might forgotten some.

I've been using Knoppix 3.1 through 4.02 on the following models (also several other distros)

Satellite Pro range
42x0 and 43x0 series (P3) all of these will work with ANY Knoppix all hardware is properly recognized. Even TV out works through fn+f5
also tested with Ubuntu, Mandrake/Mandriva and Fedora
4600 series(P3) , no problems allthough TV out will not work properly due to the Trident XP ai videochip
60x0 series , no problems allthough TV out will not work properly due to the Trident XP ai videochip
6100 series, no problems, will work with any Knoppix BUT in later versions from 3.6 and up you will need to use the cheatcode knoppix dma
to install properly (same goes for the 6050, 6070) also tested with SUSE and Mandrake/Mandriva
M10, no problems video out not tested
M30, no problems video out not tested
A10, no problems (now also tested with Ubuntu 5.10)
L10/L20, works but network problems (just a module problem I'm sure it will be fixed soon)

Tecra Range
8000, works but no sound (Yamaha opl3) use OSS free to make it work
8100, no problems
8200, no problems
Tecra 9000/9100
Has no problems whatsoever, all hardware works. (not tested with the optional bluetoothmodule)
M2, works but not yet tested with 4.02
M1, severe video problems, use framebufferoption.
M3, not yet tested
M4, works but networkproblem (wireless works the other doesn't) also since it is a tablet PC you can't use the pen no more.
S1, no problems (not tested with the optional bluetoothmodule)
S2, networkproblems, won't start unless you use knoppix nopcmcia
A4, sort of works, but 15.4" display so display is a little stretched, network not yet tested

Portege

R100, will not work with Knoppix even when cheatcodes are used, but I've only tested it with a pcmcia cdrom
funny enough Mandriva 2005 will install but can forget it has a cdrom on the pcmciaslot after install, Update 11 march 2006 Ubuntu 5.10 installs perfectly from pcmcia cdrom and works perfectly, everything is detected.
M300, will fully work, even bluetooth is recognized
R200, not yet tested but I expect the same problems as the R100 (not yet tested with Ubuntu)
7020 series, works but only through the docking (which is optional and hard to find)
7200 series, works but only through the docking (which is optional and hard to find)
4000/4010/4020 works without problems
Libretto U100, works but only through the docking (which is optional and hard to find) I've not fully tested this one yet

Satellite and Quosmio

TASC is not allowed to service these in the Benelux. But the 40x0 series will work without problem
90 percent of the Satellites will work with Knoppix the remaining 10 percent usually has a networkproblem.
Quosmio I tested but since it has several extras I can only say that it works but you need to adjust the screen, it is
a panorama notebook AND has a TV tuner on board, I haven't tested the latter so I'm not sure if it will work. It probably needs
a lot of retuning.

Hello everyone,

I am a very new newbie to linux for anything other than 8086 text only modes, but I am getting back at it. (Mostly out of sheer disrespect for Microsoft --- but that is a whole 'nuther subject.)

I have an HP ZD7188CL Intel 3.2GHz CPU with 2GB memory. Trouble hardware is the integrated Broadcom wireless adapter and the digital media reader.

Tried Knoppix live CD and everything except the digital media reader works. I say that reservedly as I have used the ndiswrapper to get the integrated wireless working. (Thanks to all the forum posts!!)
On boot up I have to specify, "Knoppix noscsi acpi=off". Without this the system goes into a boot, reboot sequence forever.

The Knoppix DVD also works as above, but external USB hard drive is not recognized without a PCMCIA card installed. I don't know if there is some internal issue creating this or not yet.

I will be working on the video next as I can only use 1024x768 mode right now and the screen under Winblows supports 1440x900. Once that is resolved I will move on to the media reader.
With all the help from the group I have used this far and more in the future, I will remaster a CD and/or DVD and repost the image wherever appropriate. (when everything works that is)

i've tried knoppix, and several other linux distributions (hdd install and live versions) on my tecra 8100, and they all have the same problem. the cpu fan won't turn on, and the intel speed step technology doesn't work.

i had a cpu melt down on one of three laptops (all identical, and with current bios updates). i lost a stick of memory in another, and i waxed a pcmcia wireless network card before i figured out what the problem was.

edit to add: i also find it necessary to use the boot cheat code fb1024x768 in order to get a full screen to display.

I wouldnt buy an ambulance ride from Best Buy if my life depended on it, theyve given me too much false information about computers.

Here's an entry, first impressions with ASUS UL30VT and Knoppix 6.2.1.
Works quite well PC only when you first get it to boot. I had to use the boot screen, by pressing ESC on bootup. Runs well from USB stick or harddrive, no problem with the Atheros wifi either. For more permanent changes, there is a 350GB NTFS partition that can be deleted and space reused for Linux/Windows partitions. I think I should try to setup a new disk instead, but I don't feel quite confident about this, as there is no Windows install media, and I'm not quite sure about recreation of the special ASUS partition either. In the old days, I could use the WINNT bootloader to start Linux - is this still possible in Win7? The easiest and least intrusive thing to do, is to boot from USB and have a Knoppix copy on disk.

Using an external monitor proved much more tricky. I had to boot with the cheatcodes no3d and screen=<actual external monitor resolution> to make it work, but then the laptop lcd may not be very useful..
