slow kdm/kde application launch after x server upgrade

    Hi all,
i installed knoppix 3.4 on my laptop (acer travelmate 212TXR). Everything was working fine till last nigth.
I did an apt-get upgrade from unstable and got a new xfree version (4.3.0.dfsg.1-2).
From then on, kdm and kde startup became very slow.
Once i get into kde, every application i try to launch take 4/5 times more than usual to start. When they are finally ready i can use'em without problem.
Any idea about how to fix it?

    TIA

    Sante

I don't think you're alone in noticing this. I noticed it as well, and wound up reinstalling xfree86 (savage branch) from dri.sourceforge.net. The last version of xfree86 was IMO, much better, but since you've upgraded, your options are: compile and overwrite the xfree86 installation with one from dri.sourceforge.net (xfree86 4.3.99), or xfree86 4.4.0 from xfree86.org, or downgrade to the one from stable (xfree86 4.1.0) or leave it as it is and wait for an upgrade to filter down into the debian repositories. Since it's your installation, it's your choice as to what you want to do.

It seems that the solution was quite simple (it worked for me, at least):
    fc-cache -f
I found it out in a post from debian-user mailing list (thanks to Joan Tur)

It also works for KDE-Cygwin. Thanks

... perhaps anyone can tell this the debian XFree86-maintainer to add this fix in his package.
i noticed this "slow start"-problem several times from update to update ...

    regards.
