    64 bit Knoppix

    For any of you that have 64 bit AMD boxes you may want to try out this 64 bit remastered version of Knoppix. I don't have such hardware so I have no idea how well it works, but it's certainly a good idea. From the author's description it does have some limitations, but still seems worth a try.

    Here's the link for those interested:

    ideal apt sources.list for amd64

    installed it right nwo... works great!

    can zou please advise how to setup up mz sources.list ideally, to get as much as posible AMD64 software instead of 32bit

    mz sources.list looks like this

    Code:
    # /etc/apt/sources.list for Knoppix
    # If you want to do a "full upgrade", you should first
    # upgrade the Packages from Debian/unstable (KDE & Co.)
    # before doing a (dist-)upgrade for Debian/testing.
    #
    # See sources.list(5) for more information, especialy
    # Remember that you can only use http, ftp or file URIs
    # CDROMs are managed through the apt-cdrom tool.

    You would probably do better to email the fellow who remastered this version of Knoppix. I'm not sure where (or if) there are many 64 bit sources. At least this is a start though.

    Actually the author makes this statement on his page:

    apt-get will fetch the 32 bit packages, they will blend nicely over the installed system as on a standard 32 bit debian. This is because the 64 bit debian is not quite ready yet and the debian 64 bit repository (debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org) is not mentioned in the sources.list file.

    right now i tried to install "kino" via apt... but i don't know how to live with the following:

    Code:
    Reading Package Lists... Done
    Building Dependency Tree... Done
    You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
      binutils-dev: Depends: binutils (= 2.14.90.0.7-6) but it is not going to be installed
      chkrootkit: Depends: binutils but it is not going to be installed
      debhelper: Depends: binutils but it is not going to be installed
      debootstrap: Depends: binutils but it is not going to be installed
      dpkg-dev: Depends: binutils but it is not going to be installed
      gimp: Depends: libgsf-1 (>= 1.8.2) but it is not going to be installed
      kernel-package: Depends: gcc but it is not going to be installed or
                               c-compiler
      kino: Depends: libdv2 (>= 0.99) but it is not going to be installed
      lib64c6: Depends: libc6 (= 2.3.2-7.biarch1) but 2.3.2.ds1-12 is to be installed
      lib64c6-dev: Depends: libc6-dev (= 2.3.2-7.biarch1) but 2.3.2.ds1-12 is to be installed
      librsvg2-2: Depends: libgsf-1 (>= 1.8.2) but it is not going to be installed
      libstdc++5-3.3-dev: Depends: g++-3.3 (>= 1:3.3.3-7) but it is not going to be installed
      libtool: Depends: gcc but it is not going to be installed or
                        c-compiler
      lvm-common: Depends: binutils but it is not going to be installed
    E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
    root@1[knoppix]# apt-get -f install
    Reading Package Lists... Done
    Building Dependency Tree... Done
    Correcting dependencies... Done
    The following extra packages will be installed:
      binutils binutils-dev cpp-3.3 g++-3.3 gcc-3.3 gcc-3.3-base gimp gimp-data
      libgcc1 libgsf-1 libstdc++5 libstdc++5-3.3-dev
    Suggested packages:
      binutils-doc gcc-3.3-doc gimp-help gimp-python libstdc++5-3.3-doc
    The following packages will be REMOVED:
      lib64c6 lib64c6-dev lib64gcc1 lib64ncurses5
    The following NEW packages will be installed:
      binutils g++-3.3 gcc-3.3 libgsf-1
    The following packages will be upgraded:
      binutils-dev cpp-3.3 gcc-3.3-base gimp gimp-data libgcc1 libstdc++5
      libstdc++5-3.3-dev
    8 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 4 to remove and 200 not upgraded.
    it wants to deinstall the 64 bit gcc and more... can you please tell me what to change on the apt-sources to get rid of this?

    You can try "apt-get -t unstable install kino" This may work, but I'm not sure. You may want to try it with the "-s" option first to try a simulation.

    aaahhh so is "-t unstable" the option to let "apt-get" get sources and compile them ?

    No. Knoppix is a mix of Debian stable, testing, and unstable. Because of this, upgrading and adding new pacakages can often be a headache. The "-t" option tells apt to grab the install from unstable AND resolve all dependencies from there as well. In my experience this keeps apt from removing various packages the way that it sometimes does in Knoppix. In short, it doesn't break things nearly as often.
