Stalled AT Poor Man's install with KNOPPIX 3.4

    Hi!
Just downloaded knoppix3.4 iso last night under windows ,
I have many times used the FAQ located at
    (http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/HdBasedHowTo)
to install the KNOPPIX 3.4 from my hard drive instead of from CDROM.

    I copied KNOPPIX to D:\KNOPPIX\

    strangly knoppix3.4 doesn't contain "mkfloppy.bat"& "boot-en.img" anymore.
later I tried "mkfloppy.bat"& "boot-en.img" from KNOPPIX3.0 cd ,it just couldn't find knoopix file on
    "D:"(hda3)....I just stalled there........

What should i do to install from HD properly?any more concise methods?
pls. inform the actual commands step by step!

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards!

    TOM

With Knoppix 3.4, it's really easy to run with the ISO saved on your hard drive. (Even on an NFTS partition, which is safe, since it's read-only.) Boot from the Knoppix CD (!) like normal, but use the cheatcoade bootfrom at the boot prompt.

For example, say I have KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-17-EN.iso saved on my hard drive in the directory C:/Andrews/Downloads/Live-CDs. The command I'd use, after booting from the Knoppix CD, is this:

    knoppix26 bootfrom=/dev/hda1/Andrews/Downloads/Live-CDs/KNOPPIX*.iso

    Add other cheatcodes as normal.

It's a whole lot faster than running Knoppix off the CD, that is for sure! Plus it should free up your CD drive for other things.

    Hi!

    I just tried:

    ==========
    knoppix26 bootfrom=/dev/hda12/Downloads/KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-17.iso
    =============

it returned with: no such kernel,
    what should I do next?

also what do you mean by "Add other cheatcodes as normal"? could you specify it?

    till then.......

Are you booting from a Knoppix 3.4 CD? Doesn't sound like it, else booting with "knoppix26" would work. More important, I think the "bootfrom" cheatcode will only work with Knoppix 3.4.

If you can't, we'll go to Plan B(tm).

This kind of depends on your computer and whether you've got a persistent home and configuration files saved. But to give you an idea, I use:

    knoppix26 bootfrom=/dev/hda1/Andrews/Downloads/Live-CDs/KNOPPIX*.iso noapm alsa myconf=/dev/hda2 home=/dev/sda1/knoppix.img

"noapm" disables Advanced Power Management, which (on my computer) causes Knoppix to hang. (YMMV)

"alsa" causes Knoppix to load the ALSA sound drivers instead of OSS.

The "myconf=" line tells Knoppix to load the saved configuration files from hda2 (a partition on my hard drive).

The "home=" line tells Knoppix to load a persistent home directory off a USB thumb drive (aka "sda1").

    currently I boot from knoppix3.0 CD as I don't own a CD-burner yet .....
so it won't work with "knoppix26",
Pls. elabrate the details of your suggested "PlanB(tm)" step by step & command by command,ok?
    I await .............................

I'm pretty sure that your boot version and run version have to match. Version 3.4 uses a fundamentally different boot process. That's why when you're researching how to do a "poor man's" install of version 3.4, you can pretty well disregard everything that was written on the topic prior to May 2004, when 3.4 was released. As a result, probably 85% or more of the stuff you find on the WIKI or by searching is going to be worthless.

I think Plan B would involve making boot floppies once you have the program (NOT the iso file) saved on your hd. Trouble is, you have to get into knoppix 3.4 to do this and to make the boot floppies.

As far as I can tell, based upon what I have read so far, you are stuck unless and until you get a 3.4 CD burned or purchased, or until someone makes the 3.4 boot floppies for you.
