Thread: Xf86config-4 needed for mouse but limits resolution !?

    Xf86config-4 needed for mouse but limits resolution !?

    I am new to linux and just did a hd install
    i ran Xf86config to setup the resolution for my monitor
    after the setup was finished i realized my resolution was set for 1280x960 not the 1280x1024 that i chose. Through some playing around i found out that if i deleted Xf86config-4 and restarted x i got the resolution i wanted , but my mouse stopped working. Choosing between clear text or a working mouse is hard Please help !

    X v4 will default to using XF86Config if XF86Config-4 is unavailable.

    Back up both files, then transplant the rodent section from XF86Config-4 into XF86Config. With -4 renamed to something else, start X and see if it all works in the fashion you need it to.
    Then simply cp XF86config XF86Config-4

    Being the newb i am , and tired of fighting with keyboard shortcuts everytime i mess this up

    i have fought with this for a good 2 hours now and got no were. At least i have mastered the art of joe /etc/X11/Xf86Config.

    An Xf86Config that will work for me would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advace

    Did X work correctly when booted to live cd? If so you can simply boot Knoppix, mount the partition you installed Knoppix to and copy the XF86Config-4 to your hdd install. So, if you installed to /dev/hda1

    mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
    cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /mnt/hda1/etc/X11/XF86Config-4

    voila!
