Click on 'K menu' -> 'Knoppix' -> 'configure' -> 'Set password for root' !!!!!
I understand your frustration. When a screen does not display anything it usually indicates that the program is buggy or broken. I can assure you that the commands I mentioned do if fact work even though it doesn't appear to work.Originally Posted by |enouf|

^--- simple yet effective - thanks!
I've learned that you can save all your work in a saved state type of environment.. I don't know if it helps but I will describe how to get to it on the 5..0 DVD of knoppix
The program is called
"Crerate a persistent disc image"
to get to it you:
click on the penguin at the bottom left when the bottom bar is opened wide
-->CLICK THE PENGUIN/TUX
--->CLICK FIRST OPTION AT THE TOP LABELED(CONFIGURE\)
you should see a little house symbol that states "Crerate a persistent disc image"
--SELECT THAT--
NOW it will create a section in the partition where it saves your work.
HAPPY TRAILS!!!
