Edit linuxrc and change the user preferences....knoppix 3.4

1)I'm tryng to edit linuxrc from minirt24.gz of knoppix 3.4 with joe, vim, etc... And when i test the iso it doesnt boot anymore...

Can anyone tell me step by step how to do it correctly???... I want to change the "Welcome to the KNOPPIX....." ...

2) How can i change the user preferences in 3.4???:... i want some especific options for icewm and gkrellm but i wont have good results...
Again... step by step please...

Any clue????
