3Com 812 Router, newbie

Do you know how to change the admin. name and password? I haven't seen it on the guide and "root>!root" is not working for me. Do I reset it? Then "root" is gonna work, isn't it? But is the connection gonna work?

See, a guy came, installed the router and left no CD. Just two folders.

Did you read the manual that shah gave you the link for? It spells it out pretty clearly in there. Did you check you dip switch settings? Apparently in some modes, like the default bridge mode, there is no set-up and so no user/password; that might be your issue. Read the manual, others can't read it for you - I've read it but only you can know the answer to the obvious questions.

Edit: I figured out I had to switch to Default Bridge Mode to enter as root. I have done it exactly as it says and it's not working. I don't know what more can I do...

Well, actually I'm trying to read it and it's getting worse and worse, because of my english and because I don't find it easy. You know, it didn't seem an obvious question for me.

OK, sorry, I didn't know you had a language problem. But this forum is also in english, so the manual is still more likely to give you better answers than this forum. From what I found in the manual (I've never seen the actual router) it's a slick device with a ADSL modem and a 4 port router combined into one package. There are dip switches that let you put in into DHCP smart mode (which should need a user/password), one of two "bridge modes", which might not use the user/password since there's nothing to configure. (I'm not sure yet why there are two such modes) and a special "unconfigured mode" which apparently giveds you even more set-up options and thus should need a user/password as well. I just guessing, but maybe the router is in bridge mode and that's why you don't get a user/password prompt. Check the switches against what the book tells you.

Of course, resetting the router should get you to the default user/password settings (as long as the switchs are in the right settings), but be sure you know enough to set up the router again before you press that button. In particular, be sure that you know yout login username and password to your ISP (different than the user/password to access the router) so that you can configure the router to log into your ADSL account.

If the modem is in DHCP mode then, as others have already said, it should just work when you boot knoppix. You don't need any magic drivers or anything else.

However, it may be in bridge mode. As far as I can tell, that disables the DHCP and the built-in router, Your computer than may have to be running PPPoE software under Windows to access your ISP. If that's the case you could run PPPoE under Knoppix too; but it would be far far better to just put the router into DHCP mode, tell it to log-in to your ISP, and let the computer (running either Knoppix or Windows) lconnect to the router without having to run any special PPPoE software at all (you can even remove that software from your Windows system after you do this, you will not need it).

Hope that gives you something to start looking at, but if not, RTFM!

I changed the router to DHCP and it couldn't obtain the IP. So I'm gonna take a look to this thread:

Knoppix fails to obtain an IP via DHCP from the ADSL Router.

Edit: Seems even Windows can't take the IP. After changing it, I killed my internet connection. So I went back to unconfigured (how it was initially) and rewrote the IP. It works fine.

Before doing my last try in DHCP router and tip IP manually, I would like to know something: in Windows I haven't got this info:

Broadcast server
Nameserver

Can I just delete them in netcardconfig a click "ok" or do I need them?

Broadcast server- you don't need this if your pc not acting as a "server"
Nameserver- depends on your i.s.p.
How to delete/edit- use editor (kedit/kwrite) to open /etc/network/interfaces and make sure you are SU.

Sorry if this is obvious, but ISP is the name and password I use for the ADSL account (the mail account that was made with my subscription)?

I.S.P = internet service provider

Some I.S.P will provide you with DNS servers I.P (their server) usually two of them. If you run windows, run this command :
ipfconfig /all , it will list the DNS server.
