You certainly should be able to get it working without what I'm going to say next, and I hope that someone else can help you with that.

However, for the cost of a very inexpensive DSL/cable router (as low as $10 U.S. here in the states), you can completely avoid this problem and have an extra level of security as well. The router gets configured with your DSL login information and takes care of that, PPPoE and/or anything else that your DSL connection needs. You computer or computers run any OS you want and get their network setup by DHCP and you're on the network as soon as you boot. Keep your eyes open for a sale or a good price on one and I doubt if you'll regret it. I particularly like the features of the Dlink brand, but Linksys and others will work as well. Low end (best to avoid) are Belkin and Netgear (IMHO).

    did you edit your /etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider.

I wouldn't go for a router for a single machine, because linux can handle security by itself (lot's of routers with firewall are running linux!) and needs power all the time.
Setting up linux or setting up the router should be similar complicated.

Try change your netmask from : 255.255.255.255 to
    255.255.255.0
    or
    255.255.0.0

Hi. I had the same problem and this is what I did to solve the problem. I haven't figured out why, and whether there is a better way to solve it but now I can access the Net easily with my dsl.

Firstly, if you have already set up using the usual programs, then you should re-install. I don't know how else to undo the things that have been done by those programs. Nothing I tried worked. It seems that these usual set-ups assume that the connection is via a router or something. I might be wrong though. I have my dsl modem connected directly to my network card.

If you do a reinstall, then ONLY SET UP YOUR NETWORK CARD drivers. Don't do anything else. Don't configure, especially the card you use to connect to the modem (usually eth0).

Unpack the rp-pppoe program that you have downloaded and run the "go-gui" option, NOT THE "go" option which will set up pppoe the usual way. With the "go-gui" option, you can turn on and off your connection via a program. You should be able to configure the connection set up - you have done it many times I'm sure. You need to know if your modem is connected to eth0 or eth1 if you have more than 1 NIC. You should choose the option to be able to run the program without being root.

To run the program you have installed, type "tkpppoe" in a console. Configure your connection and give it a name. There are start and stop buttons and an exit button. Exit doesn't stop your connection - you have to stop it first. There is a manual in the rp-pppoe files that you can read. But it is pretty straightforward. If it works for you, you can set up a link to the program on your desktop.

    Hope this helps.
