    "KPPP Cannot find modem /dev/modem"

Recently got Knoppix_V3.4 (2004.05.17) live CD.

It does not recognize my dial-up modem.

It responds "KPPP Cannot find modem /dev/modem".

    (The modem IS recognized and DOES work with LindowsCD 4.0.471 and with LinspireLiveCD 4.5.453;
both of them seem to have the "same" dial-up tool as is on the KnoppixCD 3.4.).

Here's what I get when I "Query Modem" in the Kppp dial-up tool in Lindows:

    Lindows Query Modem Results:

    ATI: 56000
ATI1: Smart Link 56K Voice Modem unknown Version 2.7.14

    S25=000 S26=000 S27=008 S28=000 S29

    Here are console results:

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Knoppix does not include Smartlink modem drivers. You can build your own on a Hd-install, but some knowledge is needed. Some knoppix variants include many extra drivers, maybe look into one of them.

Thank you, kelmo, for your help.

Do you have a suggestion about _where_ I might go to check which Knoppix* variants might include SmartLink modem drivers?

    [and/or, other "live CDs"]

    Many thanks...

wsg, I installed Knoppix v3.4 r2004-05-10 on my system back on the weekend.
I ran into the same problem you had.

The problem is that KPPP is trying to access the modem, and not the PORT the modem is hooked up to.

KPPP -> Configure button -> Device tab -> Modem Device drop down list.
There, select the com port the modem is hooked up to.
Then on the Modem tab, click Querry Modem.
It should now find the modem.

    Thanks, Jenifur.

I did go through that procedure, and I think I tried every one of the ports listed in the drop-down menu...to no avail.

But, I think I'll go back and try it again the next time I boot the Knoppix CD.

    Regards...

    Kelmo...

Among the packages included in the Kanotix list of software, I see these two entries:

    sl-modem-daemon2.9.8-1932kSmartLink software modem daemon

sl-modem-modules-2.6.6-kanotix-32.9.8-1+10.00.Custom530kSmart Link modem modules for Linux (kernel 2.6.6-kanotix-3)

Do you have any idea if they would help with my system?

    Thanks & Regards...

    wsg,

I really meant to suggest that you should install Kanotix instead of knoppix.

Indeed the packages that are included in it are for your modem, but the drivers must be built for the very system you are running, so you cannot just get precompiled binaries from elsewhere and expect them to work for you.

Well, kelmo, as you can see from my lengthy post on the Kanotix Forum (english - general) my system is one wiith no hard drive, so I can't install anything -- just boot and operate from CD.

So, even if I had the Kanotix CD, I would still need to go in search of a modem DRIVER specific for my system, and it would still have to be somehow inserted into the CD** itself. (Don't even know if that's possible.)
**OR, would it have to be on the motherboard - OR...???

Who, among all the developers/venders involved in designing systems, would be the ones who "BUILD DRIVERS" for specific systems?

    Thanks again for your help...
