    how can i recover data??

    Hi,

I've gotten Knoppix to run on my dell inpsiron 600m laptop which had crashed, so now I can see the files on my hard drive and access them. Is there any way I can burn them to a cd to back them up? I'm having problems installing K3Bsetup 2....it says "could not update all permissons" and tells me to run the setup as a root. I have no idea what this means, so if someone could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Would this method work anyway? I have a cd-rw, but it's my regular cd-rom drive....would i need an external one if i wanted to back up my data? If so, is there any other way to do it? Thanks.

    Andre

In the Docs section of this site is a very good HowTo on recovering data using Knoppix. It's conviently called "Knoppix Data Recovery HowTo". It provides several options on how to get your data. Very well written.

jees, you could use several things.
    USB-cd-burner, network, external usb-hdd...
    what does
    Code:
    cdrecord -scanbus
    say?
    and what does
    Code:
    dmesg|grep CD
    say?

Okay....sorry for the length of the following but I am entirely baffled by all of this.

Just to clarify, I only have 1 cd-rw drive, and I wanted to eject the cd running knoppix so I could free it up to back up some data files. I don't have a usb hard drive or an external burner. I tried the toram command but I am just short of the required RAM, so that's not working. My system was a windows XP home, which I believe is NTFS, so I wouldn't be able to use TOHD, right? I was able to find a way to eject the cd which i found in another thread ....I typed this in and it worked, and then i put in a blank data cd

    $sudo umount -l /cdrom
    $sudo eject /dev/cdrom

However, K3B wouldn't burn my cd after i did this....it said something about not being able to write the iso file- which is confusing because i was trying to burn mp3's and doc files. Is there any way to get it to work?

    OErjan-

When I type in cdrecord- scanbus, I get a lot of info - "this version of cdrecord is an inofficial release......", and then it says
    Linux sg driver version 3.1.25
    using libscg version 'schily-0.8'
    scsibus0:
    0,0,0 0) HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N A100 removable CD-ROM
and then numbers 1 thru 7 with stars next to them

when i type in dmesg | grep CD I get

    hdc: HL-DT-STCD-RW/DVD-ROM GCC-4241N, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
    Type: CD-rom
and then some more similar stuff

    many thanks

    Andre

Why don't you just reinstall Xp rather then waiting your problem got solved?
Do all the backup from xp. Since you think it's ntfs partition, the risk of loosing data is less if it is done from xp.

If later you don't want to use xp anymore, then you can repartition your hard disk to use knoppix...offcourse after you did your backup.

Well I would, but I'm getting a blue screen with a stop: C000021a error, and a repair install didn't work....I thought I would lose all my data with a clean re-install.

K3b makes an iso file unless you specify not too, its to help speed things up.

Root is the same as administrator on windows.
though this probabl won't make a difference because you can't burn anyway, try typing sudo k3bsetup 2

Do you know how full you Windows partition is? if you have atleast 720(thats a little more then you need but i'm not sure of the hardrive transfer size) free you should be find (though you won't be able to burn larger disks.)

Hit Alt-F2 and type qtparted, if it gives you some error about not being in root mode, hit Alt-F2 again and type sudo qtparted.

Next click Hda. Look at the bar on the right and see how much free space you have. if its 720+ then right click and click resize, drag the slider to the desired amount (I wouldn't go over 1 gig, you can manually type in the size also) Now, right click on the new empty space and create a partition, make it Fat32 so windows can see it later on, if you have over 720 megs, make the Fat32 partiton about 720, and then creat a swap partition with the remaining space, (creats more memory for knoppix)

(Try and note what the fat32 partiton is named, should be hda2
Apply the settings and then reboot.

When you get to the first screen, type in knoppix tohd=/dev/hda2(or whatever number the fat partiton is).

Wait for the cd to be copied, then when its done remove the cd and let knoppix boot as usual.

Now you have a free cd-RW drive and some more memory (if there was room for the swap)

Remove hotfix Q282026 from your xp system.

Anyway clean install will not delete your data, unless you put all your data inside windows folder.
