Well currently knoppix can read ntfs files just fine. But it has trouble writing them. Your best bets are to send the files to a Fat or ext filesystem.
I want to use Knoppix to copy ntfs files from win xp hard drive before reinstalling xp. Does it matter what the file format is on the hard drive I am copying the files to? I want to copy the xp files back to the original hard drive after reinstalling xp.

or copy them to another windows XP machine sharing a drive over the network (it won't matter what the filesystem is because the samba/windows networking layer will take care of managing the transactions). Open Konqueror and type
