xine on knoppix 3.3 will not play dvds

it will play the start of my dvd, the 1st 5 seconds, and i get the FBI warning, then it shuts down, and closes, xine, i don't know what to do.

i have no clue about linux, all i know, is i have no sound on Windows, buti have sound on my linux cd, so i would like to watch a dvd, since i cant on windows , well can't with sound

If you are still unable to play your dvd's please provide error messages.
By error messages I mean that you can run applications from the terminal or shell and if there are problems there will be some kind of output created.

One more thing; if you open a terminal ( it's the little monitor looking icon with a ">" prompt )
You can enter the following command (without the quotation marks ) "xine-check" and the software with xine will tell you what it needs to run correctly. Hope this helps.

I have a "similar" problem, with Kaffeine, but then again, Kaffeine uses the same "background" engine that Xine uses - so they are similar issues...

I can play a DVD movie, and it "appears" that when the movie has a "glitch" or "hiccup", where a normal TV DVD player will go through a "skip", the computer DVD player will crash, usually with an error stating that "the source can not be read, possibly no disc" message.

I posted this error to the Kaffeine Forums, and the response was that it is a problem with the libs that are used by Xine - its that same lib that you must get "special" to get DVD's to play, the libcss2 something... The resolve is to live with it, until the lib is updated -=- someday...

My problem may be the same as yours is, but with a different "front-end" player, even though both Xine and Kaffeine use the same "Xine" engine in the "background" - this "glitch" can happen right at the start of the play, in the middle, during a menu selection, you name it... and if I just hit "play" again, sometimes it will continue fine, or lock the complete system up... Possibly an updated lib is out there already, even though every DOC and HOWTO always points to the same version, even my own documentation has a specific wget version in it...

Your problem may be the lib issue, try starting a Konsole window, and running xine in that window, when it crashes the next time, it should dump somthing to that window on what the problem is, or what caused it to crash...

i also got "libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1_i386.deb" but no idea how to move it from my "download manager" to where it must go, where ever that may be

"dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1_i386.deb" should install the package.
(dpkg might want the exact location of the file e.g /usr/local/downloads/libdvd....)

You may need libdvdread too.

"xine-check" will give a run down of what's needed/missing.

XVideo is an X server extension introduced by XFree86 4.x. This
extension provides access to hardware accelerated color space
conversion and scaling, which gives a great performance boost.

hmm... I'm not sure what that means. Are you running knoppix from your hard drive?

(I hope..) Also try the command again as root, and see what happens then.

You could also use the kpackage package manager to install libdvdcss... since its a GUI it might be preferable. Let us know how you make out, and good luck.

I understand you want to play your dvd's. Linux does have a learning curve which "throws"
some people, but it's advantages are huge if you stick with it. ( Consider this statement a linux promotion if you want)

If you have a hard drive installation of knoppix you should be able to install the required dvd library i.e libdvdcss...either by using kpackage or dpkg -i at the command line.

I have xine working on both knoppix 3.3 & 3.4 so it can be done.
